Uniworld SS La Venezia – My Experience on the Venice & the Jewels of Veneto River Cruise
Uniworld SS La Venezia – My Experience on the Venice & the Jewels of Veneto River Cruise
When I booked my holiday on Uniworld‘s SS La Venezia, I knew it would be special, but I never expected to fall in love with this style of travel quite so much. From exclusive experiences in Venice to impeccable service on board, this journey showed me why luxury river cruising has such a devoted following. If you've ever dreamed of seeing Venice beyond the crowds, this itinerary deserves a place at the very top of your travel wish list.
First Impressions of SS La Venezia
From the moment I stepped aboard SS La Venezia, it felt more like checking into an elegant Venetian boutique hotel than a cruise ship.
Inspired by the city's rich heritage, the interiors are beautifully decorated with Murano glass, luxurious fabrics, intricate detailing and elegant furnishings that perfectly reflect the romance of Venice.
One of the biggest surprises was just how spacious everything felt. The lounges are wonderfully comfortable, the dining room is beautifully designed and every area invites you to simply sit back, relax and watch Italy drift by.
The cabins are stylish, comfortable and thoughtfully designed, with incredibly comfortable beds and everything you need for a luxurious stay.
The Uniworld Difference
I've travelled with many holiday companies over the years, but Uniworld genuinely offers something different.
Almost everything is included, allowing you to simply enjoy your holiday without constantly reaching for your wallet.
Your cruise includes:
Luxury accommodation
Fine dining throughout the day
Premium wines, beers and spirits
Carefully selected shore excursions
Transfers
Gratuities
Exceptional service from an outstanding crew
What really stood out for me was the staff. Every member of the team seemed genuinely passionate about making every guest feel welcome. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and by the second day they already knew everyone's favourite drinks and preferences.
It's this level of personal service that makes Uniworld feel incredibly special.
Seeing Venice Without the Crowds
One of the absolute highlights of the trip was experiencing Venice in a completely different way. Rather than staying in a busy hotel and joining the crowds each morning, we were already in the heart of the city. Being able to wander the quieter streets early in the morning or later in the evening, once many day visitors had left, allowed us to appreciate the real beauty of Venice. Every narrow canal, hidden bridge and charming piazza seemed even more magical.
An Evening I'll Never Forget
The standout moment of the entire cruise was undoubtedly our exclusive evening visit to St Mark's Basilica. Uniworld arranged private after-hours access once the basilica had closed to the public. Walking into one of the world's most famous churches without the usual crowds was simply breathtaking. The golden mosaics shimmered under the lights, creating an atmosphere that was peaceful, emotional and unforgettable. It felt like stepping back through centuries of Venetian history and is something that very few visitors ever get to experience. For me, this was one of those genuine "pinch me" travel moments.
Exploring the Jewels of Veneto
Although Venice is undoubtedly the star of the itinerary, the cruise also explores the beautiful Veneto region, offering a wonderful blend of culture, history and authentic Italian life. One of my favourite excursions was to the colourful island of Burano, famous for its brightly painted fishermen's houses lining the canals. Every street seemed more picturesque than the last, with vibrant shades of pink, blue, yellow and green reflected in the water. It's a photographer's dream and a wonderfully peaceful place to wander, browse the small independent shops and soak up the laid-back atmosphere. Burano is also renowned for its delicate handmade lace, a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
Another highlight was visiting Murano, the island that has been producing world-famous glass for over 700 years. Watching a master glassblower at work was absolutely fascinating. With incredible skill and precision, molten glass was transformed into beautiful works of art in just a matter of minutes. It gave me a real appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the stunning Murano glass that can be found throughout Venice and beyond.
Each excursion was expertly organised, with knowledgeable local guides bringing every destination to life through fascinating stories and local insight. One of the real pleasures of river cruising is that you're never constantly packing and unpacking. Your luxury floating hotel travels with you, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy each new destination while your ship takes you effortlessly to the next.
The Food Onboard
Dining onboard was another real highlight. Every meal showcased fresh regional ingredients alongside classic Italian dishes and international favourites.
Breakfast offered everything from freshly baked pastries to cooked options, lunch was a relaxed buffet with plenty of choice, while dinner felt like dining in an excellent restaurant each evening.
Of course, no Italian holiday would be complete without delicious pasta, wonderful seafood and excellent wines.
Why River Cruising is So Relaxing
There's no rushing between hotels, no airport transfers every few days and no lengthy coach journeys.
Instead, you simply unpack once, settle into your beautiful surroundings and let the destinations come to you.
The pace is gentle, the scenery constantly changes and there's plenty of time to enjoy a drink on deck while watching the Italian countryside drift past.
