My Stay in Naxos Town – Why I Fell for Naxos 🇬🇷💙

There’s something about the Greek islands that draws me back, and my recent stay in Naxos Town reminded me exactly why.

Naxos is one of those places that feels authentically Greek while still offering everything you could want from a holiday. It’s beautiful, relaxed, full of character and, importantly for me as a travel agent, somewhere I’d happily recommend to clients looking for something a little different.

🏛️ Staying in Naxos Town

Naxos Town, or Chora, are centred around the old town, with its maze of narrow, whitewashed lanes, little shops, cafés and traditional tavernas.

One of my favourite things was wandering around and seeing where the streets took me. Around every corner there seemed to be another pretty little doorway, bougainvillaea-covered building or terrace tucked away in the old town.

And then there’s the famous Portara, the huge marble gateway sitting on the little island of Palatia, just a short walk from the harbour.

It’s one of those sights that you can photograph a hundred times, but seeing it in person, particularly around sunset, is something else.

🌅 The evenings are part of the experience

Naxos Town really comes alive in the evening.

The waterfront is lined with restaurants and bars, while the old town gradually fills with people enjoying dinner, drinks and a wander through the lanes.

I loved that you can have a lovely evening without needing to plan everything around getting a taxi back to your hotel. If you stay in or around Naxos Town, so much is right on your doorstep.

And, of course, there is plenty of Greek food involved! 🇬🇷

🚗 Exploring beyond Naxos Town

Although I didn’t visit the beaches during my stay, Naxos Town offered plenty to see and do without spending time by the coast.

One thing I particularly liked about Naxos is that there is much more to the island than its coastline. The interior is mountainous and incredibly scenic, with traditional villages, churches, olive groves and countryside that feels a world away from the busier coastal areas.

If you like to explore rather than spend your entire holiday around a hotel pool, Naxos gives you plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.

And this is where I think my own trips are so valuable when I’m helping clients.

I don’t just want to repeat the usual descriptions you might read in a brochure. I want to tell you what it actually feels like to stay there, where I think you’ll enjoy staying, what works for different types of travellers and what might not.

💙 Would I recommend Naxos?

Naxos Town would particularly suit anyone looking for a Greek island holiday with character, good food, beautiful scenery and plenty to explore.

It’s a great option for couples, friends and anyone who wants more from their holiday than simply staying around a hotel.

And if you’re torn between the Greek islands, don’t just assume you need to choose the most famous one.

Sometimes the places that aren’t quite as obvious end up being your favourites.

Naxos is definitely an island to add to my list. 🇬🇷💙
