The Destination That Completely Surprised Me

The Destination That Completely Surprised Me

As a travel agent, I‘m lucky enough to visit some incredible destinations, but now and then, somewhere really surprises me. For me, that place is South Korea.

I'd heard all about the skincare, the food, the shopping and the vibrant culture, but nothing quite prepared me for how much I'd fall in love with it. From the moment I arrived in Seoul, I knew this was going to be a trip to remember.

South Korea is a country of contrasts. Ancient palaces sit amongst glittering skyscrapers, peaceful temples are tucked away behind bustling shopping streets, and every neighbourhood has its own unique personality. It's a destination that somehow feels both exciting and calming at the same time, and that's exactly what made it so special.

Seoul – A City That Has It All

Seoul quickly became one of my favourite cities I've ever visited.

It's energetic without feeling chaotic, modern without losing its history, and incredibly easy to explore. Whether I was discovering hidden cafés, strolling through beautiful streets or simply watching the world go by, there was always something new to experience.

It's one of those cities where you don't need a strict itinerary; some of the best moments come from simply wandering.

Myeongdong – Where I Could Have Spent Days

If you're anything like me, you'll absolutely love Myeongdong.

The streets are alive with energy, filled with fashion boutiques, beauty stores and some of the most tempting street food you'll ever see. I went with every intention of buying a few skincare products... and left wondering how I was going to fit everything into my suitcase!

Korean skincare really does live up to the hype. The choice is incredible, the prices are fantastic, and it's impossible not to get caught up in the excitement of discovering new products.

Of course, shopping wasn't the only highlight. Every evening,g the streets transformed into a food lover's paradise. From crispy Korean fried chicken and spicy tteokbokki to freshly grilled skewers and delicious sweet treats, I was constantly finding something new to try.

Treating Myself to a Korean Nail Experience

One thing I knew I wanted to do while I was in Seoul was visit a Korean nail salon, and it ended up being one of my favourite experiences.

The attention to detail was unlike anything I'd experienced before. Every design was carefully created, and the whole appointment felt more like a luxury experience than simply getting my nails done.

It's one of those little experiences that made the trip feel even more memorable.

Gangnam – More Than Just a Famous Name

We all know the song, but Gangnam is so much more than that.

Stylish, sophisticated and effortlessly cool, it's the perfect place to experience Seoul's modern side. From designer shopping and contemporary architecture to beautiful cafés perfect for people-watching, it has an atmosphere that's difficult not to love.

Even if luxury shopping isn't on your agenda, it's well worth spending a few hours simply soaking it all in.

Bukchon Hanok Village – Seoul's Timeless Beauty

One of the things I loved most about South Korea was how effortlessly it balances old and new.

Nowhere was that more obvious than Bukchon Hanok Village. Walking through the quiet streets lined with traditional hanok houses felt like stepping back in time, while the skyline of modern Seoul peeked through in the distance.

It was peaceful, beautiful and one of the most photogenic places I visited.

Escaping the City at Nami Island

One of the highlights of my trip was spending the day at Nami Island.

After the excitement of Seoul, it was the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy a completely different side of South Korea. Walking beneath the famous tree-lined avenues, surrounded by nature, was incredibly relaxing.

There was something wonderfully peaceful about Nami Island. It reminded me that South Korea isn't just about vibrant cities; it's also home to beautiful landscapes that make you want to stop, breathe and simply take it all in.

The Food I'll Be Dreaming About

Let's talk about the food, because it deserves its own section.

Every meal felt like an experience. Whether it was authentic Korean barbecue, comforting bibimbap, crispy fried chicken, dumplings or the endless variety of street food, every dish was packed with flavour.

One of my favourite parts of travelling is discovering local cuisine, and South Korea delivered in every possible way. I genuinely don't think I had a single disappointing meal.

Why I Already Want to Go Back

The best destinations leave you planning your return before you've even left, and that's exactly how I felt about South Korea.

It wasn't just the places I visited; it was the feeling the country gave me. The warm hospitality, the fascinating culture, the incredible food, the beautiful experiences, the history and the stunning scenery all came together to create a holiday that completely exceeded my expectations.

As a travel agent, I love helping people discover destinations they'll never forget, and South Korea has become one I'll recommend time and time again.

If you've been thinking about visiting, take this as your sign to go. Whether you're dreaming of exploring the vibrant streets of Seoul, shopping in Myeongdong, relaxing on Nami Island or immersing yourself in Korean culture, I can honestly say it's a destination that's worth every moment.

And who knows? Like me, you might already be planning your return flight before you've even unpacked.
