My Maldives Love Affair:

Three Extraordinary Resorts, Countless Unforgettable Memories

There are some destinations that stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase and returned to everyday life.

The Maldives is one of them....

Over more than 35 years in the travel industry, I've been fortunate enough to experience some of the world's most beautiful destinations. Yet there is something undeniably magical about this collection of tiny islands scattered across the Indian Ocean.

From the moment you glimpse those endless shades of turquoise from above, time seems to slow down. Your shoulders relax, your mind quietens and the outside world simply drifts away.

My recent educational trip allowed me to experience three very different Maldivian resorts: Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa, Lily Beach Resort & Spa and Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa.

Each offered something entirely unique, yet every one of them left a lasting impression on my heart.

Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa: Space, Serenity and Barefoot Luxury

Our Maldivian adventure began at Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa, nestled within one of the northernmost atolls of the Maldives.

Even getting there felt special.

A scenic seaplane flight from Malé carried us over impossibly beautiful lagoons, coral reefs and tiny castaway islands. As we approached Hideaway, the island's size immediately stood out.

Unlike many Maldivian resorts, Hideaway offers an incredible sense of space and privacy. Despite operating close to full occupancy during low season, it never once felt crowded.

I stayed in a stunning Superior Beach Residence, complete with a private pool, direct access to powder-soft white sands and plenty of room for a family to unwind in complete comfort.

Each morning began with the sound of gently lapping waves and the sight of crystal-clear water stretching beyond the beach. It was the perfect reminder of why so many people fall in love with the Maldives.

The dining throughout our stay was consistently exceptional, combining outstanding food with genuine warmth and impeccable service.

What particularly impressed me was the variety of experiences available. While many people associate the Maldives purely with relaxation, Hideaway caters brilliantly for active travellers too. Guests can snorkel one of the country's best house reefs, enjoy tennis, padel and golf, or explore the lagoon with an array of watersports.

One unforgettable highlight was the Hideaway Majestic Sunset Cruise

As we sailed across calm waters with a glass of champagne in hand, dolphins appeared alongside the boat, dancing effortlessly through the waves as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon.

It was one of those moments no photograph can truly capture.

Hideaway surprised me in the very best way. It delivers understated luxury, genuine tranquillity and a wonderful sense of freedom that is becoming increasingly rare to find.

Island Hopping to Lily Beach Resort & Spa

Leaving Hideaway was difficult.

Thankfully, another extraordinary Maldivian experience awaited.

The transfers throughout our journey were seamless, with attentive butlers available via WhatsApp and every detail handled with effortless efficiency.

After another spectacular seaplane journey and some time relaxing in the seaplane lounge in Malé, we arrived at our next destination: Lily Beach Resort & Spa.

From the moment we stepped onto the island, it felt different.

Smaller and more intimate than Hideaway, Lily Beach immediately welcomed us with its relaxed atmosphere, stunning surroundings and warm hospitality.

Then there was the renowned Platinum Plan.

Having visited countless all-inclusive resorts around the world, I can honestly say Lily Beach offers one of the finest all-inclusive concepts I've ever experienced.

Premium Taittinger Champagne by the glass, speciality dining, an impressive wine selection, included excursions, watersports, stocked mini-bars and exceptional cuisine are all part of the experience.

Rather than feeling like an all-inclusive package, it felt like luxury without limits.

Adventures Beneath the Surface

One of the things I loved most about Lily Beach was the remarkable marine life.

A guided snorkelling excursion took us across vibrant coral reefs before we reached the dramatic drop-off into the deep blue ocean beyond.

The underwater world here is absolutely breathtaking.

Then came the famous Shark Bank.

Just a short speedboat ride from the resort, we found ourselves swimming alongside large nurse sharks, graceful stingrays and countless tropical fish.

It may sound intimidating, but it was one of the most exhilarating wildlife encounters I've ever experienced.

Another memorable excursion took us in search of manta rays and whale sharks.

Although the whale sharks chose not to make an appearance, nature rewarded us in another way.

We discovered several magnificent manta rays gathered at a cleaning station, hovering gracefully above the reef as tiny fish attended to them.

Watching these gentle giants glide effortlessly through the water was mesmerising, humbling and utterly unforgettable.

It's moments like these that remind us how privileged we are to witness nature in its purest form.

Spa Days, Champagne Sunsets and Exceptional People

At Lily Beach, luxury extends far beyond beautiful villas and world-class facilities.

One afternoon I enjoyed a Balinese massage at the overwater spa.

As I relaxed during the treatment, I could look through the glass floor beneath me and watch colourful fish and reef sharks gliding through the crystal-clear lagoon below.

Only in the Maldives.

Evenings were equally special, from sunset cocktails overlooking the ocean to themed dining experiences showcasing cuisine from around the world.

One particularly memorable moment was witnessing hundreds of sharks gathering beneath the jetty during an evening feeding session. It was one of those unexpected Maldives experiences that leaves you completely speechless.

Yet what truly sets Lily Beach apart is its people.

Time and again we met guests who return year after year.

Their reason was always the same.

The staff.

After experiencing their warmth, kindness and genuine care first-hand, I completely understood why.

A Moment I'll Never Forget

While the beaches, wildlife and luxury experiences were all extraordinary, my most emotional memory came during our final full day at Lily Beach.

We were given the opportunity to plant a tree in memory of our much-loved friend, Angela.

Angela adored the Maldives.

Being able to leave a small part of her in a destination she loved so deeply felt incredibly meaningful.

It was a beautiful moment filled with love, gratitude and remembrance.

One that I will cherish forever.

Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa: A Stylish Farewell

Before beginning our journey home, we enjoyed a final site inspection at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa.

Located just a speedboat ride from Malé, the resort offers exceptional accessibility without compromising on luxury.

From the moment we arrived, I was impressed by its contemporary elegance.

Beautiful villas, stylish facilities and a relaxed atmosphere create a sophisticated yet welcoming feel. What stood out most was how effortlessly the resort balances luxury with family-friendly appeal.

There is a vibrant, modern energy here, almost a luxury beach-club vibe, that makes it feel fresh, fun and very different from many traditional Maldivian resorts.

Our final evening was spent dining on the beach beneath a spectacular full moon, accompanied by live music and one last celebratory glass of champagne.

The perfect ending to an unforgettable journey.

Why the Maldives Will Always Have My Heart

As our Turkish Airlines flight lifted off from Malé and the islands gradually disappeared beneath the clouds, I found myself reflecting on what makes the Maldives so special.

Yes, the beaches are breathtaking.

Yes, the lagoons are every shade of blue imaginable.

Yes, the resorts are undeniably luxurious.

But for me, it's the feeling the Maldives leaves behind.

The peace.

The simplicity.

The connection with nature.

The warmth of the people.

Those unforgettable moments that stop you in your tracks and remind you just how beautiful our world really is.

This journey has given me incredible memories, valuable insight for my clients and, perhaps most importantly, an overwhelming desire to return.

The Maldives has a remarkable way of capturing a little piece of your heart.

Mine is still there somewhere... between the white sands of Hideaway, the coral reefs of Lily Beach and the turquoise lagoons surrounding Hilton Amingiri.

And honestly?
