Jamaica: My Jewel of the Caribbean

Some destinations leave an impression. Others leave a lasting connection.

For me, Jamaica is firmly in the second category.

Although it had been over 17 years since my last visit, returning to this beautiful island felt instantly familiar. From the warm welcome of the local people to the rhythmic sounds of reggae drifting through the air, Jamaica has a unique ability to make visitors feel at home from the moment they arrive.

Over the years, I have enjoyed several holidays here with family and friends, and it remains one of my favourite destinations in the Caribbean. There is simply something special about Jamaica that keeps drawing people back.

Perhaps it‘s the music. Perhaps it‘s the food. Perhaps it‘s the breathtaking scenery. More likely, it's a combination of all three, together with a warmth and spirit that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Whatever the reason, Jamaica stays with you long after you've left.

More Than a Beach Holiday?

When many people think of Jamaica, they picture palm-fringed beaches, white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. While those images are certainly accurate, the island offers so much more than a traditional beach holiday.

Venture beyond the coastline and you'll discover a vibrant landscape of lush countryside, sugar cane plantations and spectacular mountain scenery. The Blue Mountains, famous for producing the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, offer some of the most stunning views anywhere in the Caribbean.

For those seeking adventure, Jamaica is packed with natural attractions. Dunn's River Falls, YS Falls and the beautiful Blue Hole are among the island's most popular experiences. One of my own favourite memories was taking the plunge into the cool waters of Blue Hole. Standing at the edge, every instinct told me not to jump, but I'm so glad I did. It remains one of the most exhilarating experiences I've enjoyed in the Caribbean.

The Jamaica I Love ❤️

While Jamaica's attractions are undoubtedly impressive, what continues to bring me back is something far less tangible.

It's the sound of reggae playing softly as the sun sets over the Caribbean Sea. It's sharing conversations with local people who welcome you as though you've known them for years. It's enjoying freshly grilled jerk chicken by the beach, accompanied by a cold drink and a spectacular ocean view.

These are the moments that create lasting memories.

Jamaica's greatest asset is undoubtedly its people. Their warmth, humour and hospitality help create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Of course, there are plenty of fascinating places to explore during your stay. Rick's Café in Negril is famous for its dramatic cliffside setting and breathtaking sunsets. The Appleton Estate offers visitors a fascinating insight into one of Jamaica's most celebrated exports, while the Bob Marley Museum provides an opportunity to learn more about the man whose music helped introduce Jamaica to the world.

For those interested in history and local legends, Rose Hall Great House is another must-visit attraction, with its fascinating stories and beautiful colonial architecture.

Negril: My Piece of Paradise 🥥

If I had to choose one area that perfectly captures everything I love about Jamaica, it would be Negril.

Located on the island's west coast, Negril is famous for its relaxed atmosphere, stunning beaches and world-famous sunsets. Every evening, the sky transforms into extraordinary shades of gold, orange and pink as the sun slowly disappears below the Caribbean horizon.

It's a spectacle that never loses its magic.

Seven Mile Beach is undoubtedly one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. The powder-soft sand and crystal-clear waters create the perfect setting for relaxation, while the laid-back atmosphere encourages visitors to slow down and truly enjoy their surroundings.

Whether you're travelling as a couple, family, solo traveller or group of friends, Negril has an appeal that suits everyone. With a wide choice of hotels and resorts, including Sandals, Beaches, Couples, Secrets, Rockhouse and the resorts of Bloody Bay, it's easy to understand why so many visitors return year after year.

My Stay at RIU Palace Tropical Bay, Negril

Some hotels are simply somewhere to stay. Others become part of the destination itself.

For me, RIU Palace Tropical Bay became part of my Jamaica story.

Located on the beautiful shores of Bloody Bay in Negril, the resort provided the perfect base from which to rediscover everything I have always loved about this remarkable island. Having spent many holidays in Jamaica over the years, returning felt like reconnecting with an old friend, and there could have been no better place to celebrate my 50th birthday.

The first thing that captures your attention is not the hotel itself, but its stunning beachfront location. Bloody Bay is one of Jamaica's most beautiful stretches of coastline, with powder-soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters that seem almost too vibrant to be real. Unlike some Caribbean beaches, the sea here is wonderfully calm, making it ideal for swimming, snorkelling or simply floating beneath the warm Jamaican sunshine.

One of my favourite daily rituals was waking early and taking a stroll along the shoreline before breakfast. At that time of day, the beach belongs to only a handful of fellow early risers. Pelicans glide effortlessly overhead while local fishermen begin their day in the distance. With a fresh coffee in hand and the gentle sound of waves rolling onto the sand, it was the perfect way to start each morning.

These simple moments are often the ones that stay with us longest.

Holidays should allow us to slow down, switch off and reconnect with what really matters, and RIU Palace Tropical Bay provided exactly that.

Food, Flavour and Jamaican Hospitality

Food has always been an important part of my travels, and Jamaica never disappoints when it comes to flavour.

Whilst the resort offers an impressive selection of international cuisine, I found myself repeatedly returning to traditional Jamaican dishes. Fresh tropical fruits, locally grown coffee, fried dumplings and Jamaican breakfast favourites provided a wonderful start to each day.

As lunchtime approached, the unmistakable aroma of jerk seasoning drifted across the resort. Freshly grilled jerk chicken enjoyed by the sea while reggae music plays softly in the background is one of those quintessential Jamaican experiences that perfectly captures the spirit of the island.

During my stay, favourites such as curried goat, rice and peas, oxtail, fresh fish and festival became regular choices. Jamaican cuisine is full of character and tradition, and every meal reflects the pride that goes into its preparation.

Of course, no Caribbean holiday would be complete without sampling a few local cocktails. The friendly bar staff quickly got to know guests, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout the resort. What stood out most was that the hospitality never felt scripted or forced. The warmth was genuine, and that is something Jamaica has always done exceptionally well.

The People Make the Difference

Whenever people ask why I return to Jamaica time and time again, my answer is always the same.

It's the people.

The gardener who greets you with a smile each morning. The waiter who remembers your favourite drink after just one visit. The chef proudly encouraging you to try a local speciality.

These may seem like small details, but they are often the memories that remain long after the holiday is over.

Jamaicans have an infectious warmth and generosity that makes visitors feel genuinely welcome. It is one of the reasons so many travellers fall in love with the island and continue to return year after year.

A Birthday to Remember

Celebrating my 50th birthday in Jamaica was everything I had hoped it would be and more.

The sun shone from morning until evening, the atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed, and the setting could not have been more perfect. As daylight faded, I witnessed some of the most breathtaking sunsets I have ever seen.

The Caribbean sky seemed to transform moment by moment, with shades of gold, orange and deep pink reflecting across the calm waters of Bloody Bay. For a brief period each evening, everything appeared to stand still.

There were no distractions.

No schedules.

No deadlines.

Just a sense of gratitude for being exactly where I was.

Those are the moments that remind us why travel is so important.

My Verdict

RIU Palace Tropical Bay may not be about ultra-modern luxury or extravagant design. Instead, its appeal lies in something far more valuable: atmosphere.

It is a place where relaxation comes naturally, where time slows down and where the beauty of Jamaica takes centre stage.

Whether I was spending the day on the beach, relaxing by the pool or exploring Negril, I always looked forward to returning to Bloody Bay. By the end of my stay, I had completely lost track of both the days and the time, which is perhaps the greatest compliment any holiday can receive.

The resort provided everything I was looking for: sunshine, fantastic food, genuine hospitality, stunning scenery and complete relaxation.

As my flight departed Montego Bay at the end of those unforgettable eleven days, I found myself looking down at Jamaica's coastline already thinking about my next visit.

Because Jamaica has never been just another destination for me.

It is a place that feels familiar, welcoming and wonderfully authentic.

And RIU Palace Tropical Bay will always be a special part of that story.

My Tips for Making the Most of Bloody Bay

One piece of advice I always give to clients visiting Jamaica is simple: make time to explore beyond your resort.

The all-inclusive experience is wonderful, but some of Jamaica's most memorable moments can be found just outside the hotel gates.

A short walk along Bloody Bay Beach will bring you to a collection of local craft stalls, easily recognised by their distinctive blue canopies. Here you'll find talented artisans creating handmade carvings, paintings, jewellery and souvenirs. Purchasing locally made products is a fantastic way to support the community whilst taking home something genuinely unique.

What I particularly enjoy about these encounters is that they are rarely just transactions. Jamaicans love conversation, and I often found myself chatting with local craftsmen and learning far more about island life than any guidebook could ever teach.

For those seeking relaxation, the beachside massages available along Bloody Bay are well worth considering. Listening to the gentle waves while enjoying a massage overlooking the Caribbean Sea is a wonderfully indulgent experience and often far more affordable than many hotel spas.

If you'd like a change of scenery from the resort, walk about 100 yards to the right - I would highly recommend visiting Office of Nature, a laid-back local beach bar where visitors and locals gather to enjoy cold drinks, sporting events and good conversation. It offers a more authentic glimpse into everyday Jamaican life and perfectly reflects the island's relaxed atmosphere.

Another favourite of mine is Woodstock Beach Bar & Grill on nearby Seven Mile Beach. Great food, cold drinks, reggae music and complimentary sunbeds create the perfect setting for a leisurely afternoon by the sea. It embodies everything I love about Negril: unpretentious, welcoming and full of character. It is not advisable to walk to 7 Mile Beach from Bloody Bay.

For those seeking a livelier atmosphere, Margaritaville Negril on 7 Mile Beach offers a more energetic beach experience with music, entertainment and plenty of opportunities to enjoy Jamaica's vibrant social scene.

Most importantly, take time to engage with the island itself. Talk to local people, try traditional Jamaican dishes, explore beyond the resort and embrace the laid-back pace of life.

That's where the true magic of Jamaica lies.
