Kandy - Botanical Gardens and Temple of the Tooth

Kandy: A Must-Visit Gem in Sri Lanka

Kandy, a vibrant and bustling city in the Central Province, is the last ancient capital city of Sri Lanka. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, it is home to the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, stretching 236 km.

I spent the morning at the outstanding Botanical Gardens, which boasts over 4,000 different plant species across its 147 acres. We opted for a buggy tour due to the heat, but if you prefer a leisurely afternoon, this is definitely the place for you! We saw bats, monkeys, and the slowest-growing tree in the world – the Fern Palm from Japan, which grows just 2mm every 15 years. Incredible!

Next, I visited Kandy’s Sacred Temple of the Tooth, an opulent temple rich in history. We concluded our magnificent day by exploring how gems and jewels are mined, made, and distributed. I’ve never seen so many precious jewels under one roof!

We finished the evening with a spectacular Fire Dance show at the Kandy Lake Club before heading back to our hotel for the night. Kandy is an absolute must-visit when heading to Sri Lanka.
