Sri Lanka: The Trip That Has It All (And Then Some)
If you’re looking for a destination that blends jaw-dropping scenery, rich culture, unforgettable wildlife, and genuinely warm people, Sri Lanka needs to be at the top of your list. I’ve just returned from an incredible 10-day journey, and honestly… I’m already planning my return.
Here’s how it unfolded.
Day 1: A Warm Welcome to Paradise
After landing, it was a short 30-minute transfer to Villa Hundira—a charming, traditional villa with a laid-back tropical jungle vibe, perfectly positioned between lagoon and beach.
Once refreshed, we headed out to explore Negombo before ending the day with a sunset lagoon boat trip. Think golden skies, calm waters, and a few surprise wildlife sightings—an idyllic start.
Day 2: Off the Beaten Track
This was Sri Lanka at its most authentic.
We visited a coconut plantation in Chilaw, learning the full process (and yes, sampling the goods—including a toddy tapping experience!). After a delicious local lunch, we continued to Wilpattu for a glamping stay at Mahoora Lodge.
Rustic jungle living—but with hot showers, proper toilets, and WiFi. That evening we enjoyed a BBQ dinner, nature walk, and stargazing.
Day 3: Safari & Barefoot Luxury
An early morning game drive didn’t disappoint—think elephants, incredible birdlife, and a few cheeky monkeys.
Later, we travelled to Trincomalee and checked into a stunning jungle-meets-beach property. Lots of Sri Lankan hotels have beautiful arrival rituals,s and Uga Jungle was no exception, making us feel special in a very unique way. That evening, ng we enjoyed sunset drinks and canapés on the beach, exceptional service, and a strong eco-focus made it a standout.
Day 4: Farm Life & Ancient Wonders
A true “pinch me” day.
We enjoyed a farm-to-table experience, including a tuk-tuk ride through the countryside and a hands-on cooking lesson with a local family. Fresh, flavourful, and completely authentic.
Then came Dambulla Cave Temple… and wow. One of those places that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
We ended the day at a unique, female-run boutique property near Sigiriya—quirky, peaceful, and full of character.
Day 5: Sunrise at Sigiriya
Up at 4:15 am—but so worth it.
Watching the sunrise from Sigiriya Rock is something I’ll never forget. After some downtime, we visited a gorgeous villa property, Jack‘s Villas, ideal for families, groups, or even yoga retreats. Sri Lanka really does cater for every type of traveller.
Day 6: Kandy Culture & Street Food
Kandy brought the buzz.
We explored local markets on a guided foodie tour—eating like locals and discovering flavours you just wouldn’t find on your own. The day ended with a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, a truly immersive cultural experience with an incredible atmosphere.
Day 7 & 8: Off-Grid & Into the Wild
Next stop: Gal Oya. And this was something special.
No signal. No WiFi. Just pure, uninterrupted nature.
We experienced one of the most ethical safaris I’ve seen—only two jeeps allowed at a time. A picnic lunch while watching elephants by the lake. Unreal.
The following day, a boat safari delivered even more—elephants, crocodiles, eagles, and endless birdlife.
Onward to Nuwara Eliya to experience the oldest tea plantation in Sri Lanka, tracing the journey from field to cup (I’ll never look at my morning brew the same way again).
Day 9: The Iconic Train Journey
This was one of the most anticipated moments—and it absolutely lived up to it.
The train journey through Sri Lanka’s hill country is hands-down one of the most scenic in the world. Misty mountains, tea plantations, waterfalls… and yes, standing in the open doorway for that photo.
In Ella, we visited the famous Nine Arch Bridge before lunch at a stunning eco-resort, 98 Acres, overlooking the valley. Honestly, I could’ve stayed there for a week.
Day 10: Galle & Coastal Charm
We wrapped up in Galle, and what a way to end.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO gem—cobbled streets, colonial architecture, boutique shops, and a laid-back, bohemian vibe. It’s the kind of place you wander, explore, and fall in love with.
We finished our journey at a beautiful coastal hotel just outside the city, watching the sunset and reflecting on what had been an unforgettable trip.
Final Thoughts
Sri Lanka truly surprised me—in the best possible way.
What stood out most? The people. Warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about sharing their home. And the focus on sustainability throughout the trip was a breath of fresh air—something that matters more than ever.
This destination offers everything: wildlife, culture, beaches, adventure, luxury, and authenticity.
And trust me—this won’t be my last visit.
