Greece Reimagined: An Expedition Through the Aegean Aboard Douglas Mawson

Greece Reimagined: An Expedition Through the Aegean Aboard Douglas Mawson

There are journeys that take you somewhere beautiful, and then there are journeys that allow you to truly experience a destination.

My recent voyage through the Greek Islands aboard AE Expeditions’ Douglas Mawson was very much the latter.

From ancient ruins and legendary mythology to authentic island life, exquisite local cuisine and unforgettable sunsets, this was Greece experienced at a slower pace — with the luxury of a small expedition ship as our base.

What makes AE Expeditions particularly special is its destination-focused philosophy. The emphasis is firmly on exploration and discovery, with fascinating talks, history and mythology woven throughout the journey. Each day ashore felt more meaningful because we understood a little more about the places we were seeing.

Crete: A Taste of the Authentic

Our journey began in Crete, with time in the enchanting Chania Old Town.

The Venetian harbour, elegant architecture and maze of atmospheric streets made Chania an effortless introduction to the Aegean. It is the kind of place where wandering without an itinerary is part of the pleasure.

In Agios Nikolaos, we experienced an agro farm, with one of the most memorable moments of the voyage — a traditional Greek cooking class.

Using fresh local ingredients, we prepared authentic Cretan dishes, including delicious stuffed vine leaves, before sitting down together to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

It was relaxed and wonderfully authentic — a reminder that some of the most rewarding travel experiences happen around a table.

Rhodes: Following in Ancient Footsteps

Rhodes brought us deep into Greece’s extraordinary past.

I travelled to Lindos, where the ancient Acropolis rises dramatically above the Aegean. The combination of archaeological treasures, whitewashed buildings and spectacular sea views was simply mesmerising.

After listening to stories of Greek history and mythology onboard, standing amongst these ancient remains brought those stories vividly to life.

It was one of those places where you find yourself pausing, looking out across the landscape and imagining the centuries of history that unfolded here.

Santorini: From Bronze Age Ruins to Sunset Magic

Santorini delivered another fascinating contrast.

Our day began at Akrotiri, the remarkable ancient settlement preserved beneath volcanic ash. Walking through its remains offers an extraordinary glimpse into life thousands of years ago.

Later, we experienced the Santorini that has become synonymous with the Greek Islands — the whitewashed villages of Oia and Fira, dramatic caldera views and that unmistakable Aegean light.

Watching the sun sink slowly across the Aegean was one of those moments that photographs simply cannot capture. It was beautiful, serene and completely unforgettable.

Syros: A Journey to Ana Syros

Our final island, Syros, offered yet another perspective.

Less about the iconic postcard image and more about authentic island character, Syros invited us to slow down and explore.

Our walk to Ana Syros involved what felt like hundreds of steps — and I’ll admit, there were moments when I questioned my enthusiasm!

But reaching the top was worth every single one.

The narrow lanes, historic buildings and sweeping views across the Aegean provided a fitting finale to our island adventures.

Athens: The Grand Finale

Our journey concluded in Athens, where ancient history meets a vibrant, contemporary city.

After days spent exploring the mythology, archaeology and culture of the Greek Islands, arriving in Athens felt like the perfect conclusion.

From the Acropolis to its lively streets and sophisticated dining scene, Athens effortlessly combines its extraordinary past with the energy of modern Greece.

Greece, Experienced Differently

What I loved most about this voyage was the sense that we weren’t simply visiting Greece — we were discovering it.

There were ancient stories behind the landscapes, local traditions behind the food and centuries of history behind every archaeological site.

And with AE Expeditions’ destination-focused approach, those stories were brought to life through knowledgeable guides, onboard talks and experiences that went far beyond the usual sightseeing.

From preparing stuffed vine leaves on a Cretan farm to standing amongst the ruins of Akrotiri, from the ancient heights of Lindos to a Santorini sunset and the climb to Ana Syros, this was a journey filled with moments I’ll remember for a very long time.

This is the Greece I love to share with clients — authentic, fascinating, beautiful and best discovered slowly.

And having experienced Douglas Mawson first-hand, I can confidently say: this is expedition cruising with a wonderfully different perspective.
