My Whirlwind Tour Through Vietnam & Cambodia
From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the mystical temples of Angkor Wat, this whistle-stop tour through Vietnam and Cambodia was nothing short of epic. With just 7 nights to explore two captivating countries, I packed in a journey full of rich culture, culinary delights, luxury stays, and unforgettable experiences. Here‘s a taste of the action — perfect for those looking for an immersive and exciting Southeast Asian escape.
Arrival in Hanoi – A City of Contrasts & Charm
After an easy and seamless journey with Thai Airways via Bangkok, our adventure kicked off in Hanoi, Vietnam’s charismatic capital. First stop: Mövenpick Hanoi, a stylish property perfectly located in the French Quarter and surprisingly boutique in feel for a large chain brand. Recently renovated, it boasts the only Macao restaurant in Vietnam, a gorgeous rooftop pool and bar, and a very sweet touch — daily Chocolate Hour at 5 pm, which is a Mövenpick signature globally.
After a short rest, we headed to the incredible Capella Hanoi, what a stunning property, true Art Deco glamour, even the indoor pool has chandeliers. The food and service are incredible. I will be back.
Next, it’s time to explore a slice of Hanoi’s nightlife and gear up for a full cultural immersion the next day.
Hanoi Highlights – History, Culture & Cyclo Rides
Hanoi is a city that blends colonial charm with deep cultural roots. Our full-day tour took us through:
• Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Former Residence – A poignant visit honouring Vietnam’s revolutionary leader.
• One Pillar Pagoda – A peaceful spiritual site with lotus-inspired architecture.
• Temple of Literature – Vietnam’s first university and a beautiful tribute to Confucian learning.
A refined lunch at Ly Club Hanoi in a restored colonial villa gave us a delicious break before jumping into our cyclo ride through the Old Quarter’s winding streets. We finished the day with a Water Puppet Show – a charming traditional performance that’s uniquely Vietnamese.
That evening, we dined at the iconic Hotel Metropole Hanoi – French colonial elegance at its finest. A must-visit whether staying or not.
Top Tip: Don’t miss Train Street — it’s wild, wonderful, and totally worth the hype.
Ha Long Bay – Vietnam’s Floating Wonderland
Next, we left the city behind and ventured into Vietnam’s most breathtaking natural wonder — Ha Long Bay. After a scenic two-hour drive, we arrived for our cruise on the Indochina Grand Lan Ha, a floating five-star experience.
Highlights Included:
• Kayaking through Bat Cave
• Swimming in the calm emerald waters for those brave enough
• A hands-on Vietnamese cooking class
• A casual game of mini golf on deck
• Watching the wonderful sunset whilst sipping on a delicious cocktail
Hoi An – Culture, Cuisine, and Colour
A complete change of pace, Hoi An charmed us with its blend of old-world beauty, artisan crafts, and culinary flair.
Our day began with a cooking class at Red Bridge School, including a guided market visit. We chopped, cooked, and devoured local dishes like Pho and Bánh Xèo — a real hands-on foodie highlight.
The afternoon brought a peaceful lantern-making workshop, followed by wandering the Ancient Town — with stops at the Japanese Covered Bridge and bustling riverside markets.
That evening, we explored the glowing, lantern-lit streets and soaked up the enchanting riverside atmosphere. Crossing the river to the livelier side of town ( for research purposes, of course).
Four Seasons Resort – Hoi An
For a true slice of luxury, our visit to Four Seasons The Nam Hai was exceptional. Feng Shui principles guide the resort’s design, and it shows — everything flows beautifully. A few highlights:
• Renovated villas (all one-beds now sleep 2 + 1; two-bed family villas are perfect for small families)
• Stunning white-sand beach, ideal for swimming and watersports
• A gelato station by the beach (yes please!)
• Tennis, pickleball, and paddle courts
• Personalised spa and wellness programmes, including singing bowl therapies
• Kids Club (4+) with its own pool + babysitting services
Pro Tips:
• Book the teppanyaki restaurant early – only 16 seats!
• Don’t miss the Hoi An Memories light show or Teh Dar Lune Circus for unforgettable evening entertainment
Final Stop: Siem Reap, Cambodia – Temples & Tuk Tuks
Our final two nights took us into Cambodia, with a morning dedicated to the iconic temples of Angkor.
Top Sites Not to Miss:
• Angkor Wat – The crown jewel of Khmer architecture
• Angkor Thom – Grand and mysterious
• Ta Prohm – Nature meets ruins in this ‘Tomb Raider’ temple
Top Tip: Arrive early — beat the heat and the crowds for the best photos and experience.
We stayed at the ultra-stylish Shinta Mani — a boutique hotel known for its design-led comfort and great location.
In the evening, consisted of a wonderful hosted dinner; the food here was incredible. Then a quick $3 per person tuk-tuk ride brought us to Pub Street and the buzzing Night Market. All in the name of research, of course!
Final Thoughts – A Tour to Remember
This trip was fast-paced, full of colour, flavour, and culture — a truly unforgettable itinerary for those looking to get a taste of Vietnam and Cambodia.
