Bangkok: A Stay at the Banyan Tree with Temples, Floating Markets & Railway Wonders
Bangkok is a city that vibrates with colour, chaos, and culture—and there‘s no better base for exploring its vibrant soul than the luxurious Banyan Tree Bangkok.
This elegant sky-high sanctuary offers sweeping city views from its rooftop bar and restaurant, serene spa experiences, and its central location offers easy access to some of Thailand’s most iconic attractions.
I would always recommend 3 nights or a 3-day itinerary filled with golden temples, boat rides through bustling floating markets, and the jaw-dropping spectacle of a train running straight through a market.
Highlights of Bangkok
Wat Phra Kaew
Often considered the most sacred temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew is located within the grounds of the Grand Palace. It houses the Emerald Buddha, a statue carved from a single block of jade.
Wat Arun
This riverside temple is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. Its towering spire, covered in colourful porcelain and seashells, sparkles in the sun. Climb the steep central tower for panoramic views of the city and river.
Wat Traimit - Temple of the Golden Buddha
Wat Traimit houses the world’s largest solid gold Buddha, weighing over 5.5 tons! Interestingly, it was hidden under plaster for centuries and was only discovered by accident in the 1950s.
Tips for visiting Temples
- Dress respectfully: No shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops. Some temples rent or sell sarongs.
- Remove shoes: Always take off your shoes before entering any temple building.
- Be mindful: Avoid loud conversations and be respectful when taking photos.
- Early visits are best: Temples can get crowded by mid-morning, so aim to arrive when they open.
Floating Market
On our visit to Bangkok, we visited Damnoen Saduak, a Floating Market, about 90 minutes from the city centre. It’s one of the most famous and photogenic markets in Thailand, with narrow canals bustling with paddle boats loaded with tropical fruits, grilled skewers, souvenirs, and locals calling out their prices in Thai.
The highlight? Eating fresh mango sticky rice from a boat while gliding past vibrant stalls. It felt like stepping back in time.
Tips for Visiting:
- Arrive early (around 8 AM) to beat the crowds and the heat.
- Bring cash—many vendors don’t take cards.
- Bargain politely—it’s part of the fun!
Bangkok‘s Train Market - Maeklong Railway Market
If you’re looking for one of the most thrilling, camera-worthy experiences near Bangkok, Maeklong Railway Market should be at the top of your list. This train market should be done at the same time as visiting Damnoen Saduak.
Located about 1.5 hours from the city, this local market looks ordinary at first—vendors selling fresh seafood, fruit, and street food under colourful awnings. But then, the unexpected happens: a train comes rumbling straight through the middle of the market. The shop owners then pull back their umbrellas and roll carts just inches away from the tracks. Within seconds, the train passes—slowly but confidently—and everyone goes right back to business. It’s chaotic, exciting and unforgettable.
Bangkok After Dark: Street Food Tour by Tuk Tuk.
There’s no better way to experience Bangkok’s buzzing nightlife and mouth-watering street food than on an evening tuk tuk tour. Zipping through the city’s neon-lit streets on a tuk tuk - it’s a foodie’s dream on three wheels.
The tour typically starts around sunset, with a friendly guide whisking you through local neighbourhoods and hidden alleyways to sample the best eats the city has to offer.
What you’ll taste:
- Pad Thai cooked on a flaming wok
- Charcoal-grilled pork skewers (moo ping)
- Crispy oyster omelettes (hoy tod)
- Thai-style roast duck or boat noodles
- And of course, mango sticky rice to finish!
Stops often include markets, roadside stalls, and even secret rooftop spots known only to locals.
Bonus: You’ll pass landmarks like Wat Arun or the Giant Swing beautifully lit at night, giving you food and photo ops.
