My Unforgettable Trip to Phuket: Staying at Centara Karon, Exploring Phi Phi Islands & The Best Excursions
Phuket had always been one of those dreamy places on my travel bucket list—the kind of destination you see on postcards and wonder if the colours are really that blue in real life. Spoiler: they are. From the moment I arrived, Phuket felt like a mix of relaxation, adventure, and pure island magic.
What made the trip even more memorable was my stay at Centara Karon, followed by a day spent exploring the world-famous Phi Phi Islands, and a handful of breathtaking excursions that made me fall in love with Thailand even more.
Let me take you through my experience.
Arriving in Phuket: First Impressions
Stepping out of the airport into warm tropical air instantly told me I was far from home. The drive to Karon Beach gave me my first glimpse of Phuket’s lush hills, local markets, and that perfect mix of beach life and Thai culture.
Phuket is lively, friendly, colourful—and somehow calming at the same time.
My Stay at Centara Karon Resort
If I had to describe Centara Karon in one sentence, it would be: the place where relaxation comes naturally.
The resort is tucked just a short walk from Karon Beach, and from the moment I checked in, I felt like I was on holiday for real. The staff greeted me with warm smiles, the kind that make you feel instantly at home.
What I Loved Most
The swimming pools — I found myself moving between the quiet pool and the one with the swim-up bar because… why not?
The rooms — spacious, airy, and perfect for winding down after a day of adventures.
The location — close enough to the beach, local restaurants, and markets, yet peaceful enough to escape the crowds.
The family-friendly vibe — even though I wasn’t travelling with kids, seeing families having the time of their lives added to the happy atmosphere.
Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, Centara Karon just works.
The Phi Phi Islands: The Day I Fell in Love with Thailand
The highlight of my trip—hands down—was the speedboat excursion to the Phi Phi Islands.
I’d seen photos of those limestone cliffs rising from emerald waters, but seeing them with my own eyes was something else entirely. As the boat approached Phi Phi Leh, everyone onboard went quiet for a moment. It was that beautiful.
My Favourite Moments
Jumping into the clear water at Pilleh Lagoon — it felt like swimming in liquid jade.
Snorkelling — I came face-to-face with colourful fish and coral reefs that looked like underwater gardens.
Visiting Maya Bay — even with its popularity, the place is unbelievably enchanting.
Lunch on Phi Phi Don — fresh seafood, beach views, and that slow island vibe.
Honestly, if you visit Phuket and skip Phi Phi, you’re missing the soul of the Andaman Sea.
Excursions That Made the Trip Even Better
1. Island-Hopping Adventures
Besides Phi Phi, I joined a second island-hopping tour to:
James Bond Island
Khai Islands
Coral Island
Each stop had its own charm, from dramatic limestone formations to shallow turquoise snorkelling spots.
2. Elephant Sanctuary Visit
One of the most meaningful experiences was visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary. Feeding and walking alongside rescued elephants—no riding, no chains—was heartwarming and an absolute must-do.
3. Exploring Phuket’s Culture
I took a half-day tour to:
The Big Buddha, standing peacefully over the island
Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most beautiful temple
Several viewpoints are perfect for photos and sunset watching
It was the perfect break from beach life.
4. Old Town & Night Markets
Phuket Old Town surprised me with its colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, cute cafés, and lively markets. The Sunday Walking Street Market was bursting with food, music, and handmade crafts.
Pro tip: Come hungry. Very hungry.
When’s the Best Time to Visit?
I went during the dry season (November–April), and the weather was perfect—calm seas, sunny days, and gorgeous sunsets. But the rainy season can be just as lovely if you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices.
