My First Visit to the Maldives: A Stay at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu
I recently had the privilege of visiting the Maldives for the very first time — and what an incredible introduction it was. Staying at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, set in the breathtaking Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, exceeded every expectation I had. This boutique island resort blends natural beauty, genuine hospitality, and a deep respect for the environment, offering an unforgettable experience for a first-time visitor like myself.
A Memorable Arrival
The journey itself felt magical. After arriving in Malé, a 35-minute seaplane ride offered stunning views of the turquoise waters and scattered islands below. As a first-timer, seeing the Maldives from above was simply awe-inspiring. Upon landing, we were warmly greeted with fresh coconut water and heartfelt smiles — a wonderful welcome that immediately made me feel at ease and excited for what lay ahead.
Accommodation:Immersed in Nature
I stayed in a Beach Villa, tucked away among lush tropical gardens and just steps from the ocean. The villa’s natural design — thatched roof, wooden interiors, and an open-air bathroom — perfectly complemented the island’s surroundings. It felt luxurious yet wonderfully authentic. Waking up each morning to the sound of the waves and stepping directly onto powder-soft sand was a dream come true. For a first experience of Maldivian island life, it could not have been more perfect.
Dining: Fresh, Flavourful, and Memorable
Every meal was a highlight in itself. The Cowrie Restaurant offered an impressive variety of international and local dishes, while Cornus Restaurant — set amongst a peaceful tropical garden — served exceptional Asian-inspired cuisine. A personal highlight was a private dinner arranged on the beach — a truly magical evening dining under a blanket of stars, with the sound of the sea in the background. Moments like that made the experience feel even more special.
Activities: Adventure and Relaxation in Perfect Balance
Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu offers the perfect mix of adventure and tranquillity. You could spend time snorkelling vibrant reefs filled with colourful fish and turtle spotting. I treated myself to a treatment at the Coco Spa, where organic, natural products added to the sense of wellbeing the island naturally inspires. One experience that particularly stood out was visiting the resort’s turtle rescue centre — a powerful reminder of the importance of conservation and Coco Palm’s genuine commitment to the environment.
Sustainability: A True Priority
It was reassuring to see that Coco Palm’s commitment to sustainability goes far beyond words. From the organic garden supplying fresh ingredients to initiatives that reduce single-use plastics, every effort is made to protect the fragile environment while providing a luxurious guest experience.
Final Reflections
For my first visit to the Maldives, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu couldn’t have been a better choice. The combination of natural beauty, understated luxury, and heartfelt hospitality made this trip truly unforgettable. If you’re considering your first journey to the Maldives — or even if you’ve visited many times — I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this peaceful, authentic island escape.
