Nice: The Heart of the French Riviera

The city’s most famous landmark is the Promenade des Anglais, a palm-lined seafront boulevard stretching for nearly seven kilometres along the coast. Here, locals and visitors stroll, cycle, or simply sit on the iconic blue chairs while gazing out over the deep blue Mediterranean.

Behind the promenade lies Vieux Nice, the city’s enchanting Old Town. Its narrow cobbled streets are filled with pastel-coloured buildings, lively cafés and bustling markets. The daily flower and food market at Cours Saleya is one of the most atmospheric in France, offering everything from fresh produce and olives to lavender and local specialities.

For panoramic views, climb or take the lift up to Castle Hill, where you’ll find sweeping vistas across the coastline and the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town.

Nice also has a strong artistic heritage. Museums dedicated to Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall showcase the Riviera’s deep connection with the art world, reflecting the inspiration the region has provided for generations of creatives.

Monte Carlo: Glamour and Luxury in Monaco

Just 30 minutes east of Nice lies the tiny but world-famous principality of Monaco. Within Monaco sits the glamorous district of Monte Carlo, synonymous with wealth, elegance and international prestige.

At the centre of Monte Carlo stands the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, an opulent Belle Époque building surrounded by manicured gardens and luxury boutiques. Even if you’re not planning to gamble, the building itself is worth visiting for its extraordinary architecture and atmosphere.

The harbour at Port Hercules is another highlight. Here, some of the world’s most impressive superyachts are moored against a backdrop of dramatic cliffs and sleek modern buildings.

Motorsport fans will instantly recognise the streets of Monaco as part of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious events in the Formula 1 calendar. The circuit winds through the streets of Monte Carlo, past the harbour and around the famous Fairmont Hairpin.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Just a few minutes from Nice is the charming harbour town of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Easily reached by train. Its deep natural bay has made it one of the Riviera’s most beautiful ports.

Pastel-coloured houses cascade down towards the waterfront, while narrow medieval lanes lead to small squares filled with restaurants and cafés. The sandy beach here is also one of the best in the area — a rarity along a coastline mostly known for pebble beaches.

The Riviera Lifestyle

What truly sets the French Riviera apart is the lifestyle. Life here revolves around the sea, sunshine and exceptional cuisine.

Restaurants across the region serve classic Mediterranean dishes such as Salade Niçoise, fresh seafood and Provençal specialities flavoured with olive oil, herbs and local produce.

Markets are central to daily life, offering colourful displays of fruit, vegetables, cheese and regional delicacies. Long lunches on sunny terraces are part of the rhythm of life here — a reminder to slow down and savour the moment.

One of the best ways to experience the Côte d’Azur is simply to explore along the coast.

Alternatively, driving the famous Grande Corniche reveals breathtaking views over the sea, dramatic cliffs and elegant villas perched high above the coast.

When to Visit

The Riviera is beautiful all year round, but each season offers a different experience.

Spring and early summer bring warm sunshine, blooming flowers and fewer crowds. July and August are the height of the summer season, when beaches, festivals and nightlife are at their most vibrant.

Autumn is particularly appealing for travellers who prefer milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, while winter offers a quieter, more authentic glimpse of life on the Riviera.
