Discover the Charm of Puglia: Alberobello, Martina Franca & Ostuni
Having just returned from the most amazing trip with Magari Tours, I felt I needed to share a little about one of Italy’s most captivating regions -Puglia.
Located in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia is a region full of charm, history and breathtaking scenery. With endless olive groves, whitewashed hill towns and a stunning Adriatic coastline, it offers a wonderfully authentic Italian experience that feels far removed from the busy tourist hotspots further north.
One of the most magical places I visited was Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its extraordinary trulli houses. These small limestone buildings with their distinctive cone-shaped roofs look like something from a fairytale. Dating back several hundred years, they were cleverly built without mortar so they could be quickly dismantled to avoid property taxes imposed by ruling authorities at the time. Today, walking through the narrow streets lined with hundreds of trulli feels like stepping into another world, with many now home to charming cafés, shops and small museums.
Another highlight was the elegant hilltop town of Martina Franca, located in the beautiful Itria Valley. Often overlooked by visitors, Martina Franca is full of stunning baroque architecture, graceful piazzas and winding streets. Cream-coloured palaces with ornate balconies line the historic centre, creating a wonderfully atmospheric setting. It’s a place where you can easily lose yourself wandering through quiet alleyways and discovering hidden corners around every turn.
Finally, there is the spectacular Ostuni, affectionately known as La Città Bianca – the White City. Perched high on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the town is famous for its brilliant white buildings which glow beautifully in the Mediterranean sunshine. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, staircases and arches, each turn revealing another postcard-perfect view. From the city walls, you can look out across miles of ancient olive groves stretching towards the sparkling coastline.
Puglia truly stole my heart. From the unique architecture of Alberobello to the elegance of Martina Franca and the dazzling beauty of Ostuni, this region offers a slower, more authentic side of Italy that is simply unforgettable. 🇮🇹
If you ever get the chance to visit, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
