My Four‑Day Escape to Puglia with Magari Tours

Where ancient traditions, unforgettable flavours, and soul‑stirring landscapes welcome you home.

Day One: Arrival in Bari and the Magic of Monopoli and Alberobello

Touching down at Bari Airport felt effortless, and within moments, we were greeted by Tony and Katia, the warm and welcoming hosts who would guide us through our journey in Puglia. Our adventure began immediately as we travelled to the coastal gem of Monopoli, a town that feels like it was designed for wandering. Its narrow stone streets twist between whitewashed houses, opening suddenly into sun‑drenched squares and tiny hidden chapels.

We stopped for lunch in a small, authentic Apulian seafood restaurant where the flavours of the Adriatic took centre stage. Dish after dish of fresh fish arrived at the table, each one more delicious than the last. The meal ended with a chilled glass of local Limoncello — the perfect introduction to the region’s culinary soul.

Our driver, Ceasar, then whisked us through the countryside, past ancient olive groves where some trees have stood for thousands of years. Soon the landscape shifted, and the iconic cone‑shaped rooftops of Alberobello appeared — our home for the next three nights.

Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a place where time seems to pause. Over three thousand traditional Trulli houses cluster around its churches and squares, creating a fairytale atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.

We were welcomed into our own Trullo by Carmela, whose pride in her heritage is infectious. Staying in a Trullo is not simply accommodation — it is an immersion into centuries of Apulian craftsmanship and tradition.

That evening we dined at Trattoria Terra Madre, a family‑run restaurant where vegetables are the stars of the show. Grown in their own garden, the produce is transformed into vibrant, flavour‑packed dishes that celebrate the land. Even meat and fish lovers will find themselves enchanted by the sheer creativity of the menu.

Puglia’s devotion to fresh, local ingredients is unmistakable, and this first evening set the tone for the days ahead.

Day Two: Exploring Alberobello and Learning the Art of Apulian Cheese‑Making

After a peaceful night in our Trullo, we returned to Trattoria Terra Madre for a breakfast that felt more like a celebration. Fresh pastries, warm focaccia, seasonal fruit, eggs, cold meats, cereals, and juices — everything was prepared with care and catered to all dietary needs.

Our guide for the day, Alex, led us on a walking tour through Alberobello’s most historic districts: Rione Monti and Aia Piccola. These neighbourhoods are home to over a thousand Trulli, each one unique, each one telling its own story. We even had the privilege of visiting a local farmer in his Trullo home, learning firsthand how these remarkable structures were built without mortar and have stood strong for centuries.

From there, our journey continued in a Classic Fiat 850T into the countryside to visit the Masseria owned by Giovanna and Franco — a place where tradition is not preserved in museums but lived every single day. Their Masseria is a working farm, rich with the scent of hay, warm milk, and the unmistakable feeling of family heritage.

Here, we were welcomed into their dairy room, where generations of knowledge have been passed down through skilled hands. Under the guidance of Lucrezia, who learned her craft from her mother and grandmother, we were taught how to make our own mozzarella, pasta and focaccia. Watching her stretch the curds with such ease and confidence was mesmerising. When it was our turn, laughter filled the room as we shaped our own soft, warm mozzarella knots — a simple pleasure that felt deeply rooted in Apulian life.

Tasting the cheese moments after making it was unforgettable: creamy, delicate, and impossibly fresh. It was one of those rare experiences that connect you directly to the land and the people who nurture it.

The day was a gentle blend of history, culture, craftsmanship, and connection — the kind of experience that makes you feel part of the place rather than a visitor passing through.

Day Three: Valle d’Itria, Whitewashed Towns, Olive Oil and Wine

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Valle d’Itria, a region defined by rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and clusters of Trulli villages. Our first stop was the circular town of Locorotondo, known for its immaculate historic centre and panoramic views.

From there, we travelled to Ostuni, the famous “White City,” perched high on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Its labyrinth of whitewashed alleys and sunlit terraces feels almost Mediterranean‑Greek, yet unmistakably Apulian.

On our return to Alberobello, we visited a medieval Masseria — a fortified farmhouse — where we sampled some of the finest olive oils in the region. Each tasting revealed a different personality: peppery, fruity, delicate, bold. I could not resist bringing two bottles home.

The evening continued with a wine tasting at the family‑owned organic Cantina Torricella Winery. Surrounded by vineyards and guided by passionate winemakers, we enjoyed generous pours paired with local snacks. We were so content and full that we completely forgot about our farewell dinner — a sign of just how satisfying the experience was.

Day Four: A Secret View of Matera and Farewell to Puglia

After another restful night in our Trullo and a final delicious breakfast, we set off for a surprise destination: Matera. This ancient city, carved into stone, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Our viewpoint overlooked the Ponte Acquedotto, the dramatic aqueduct bridge featured in the James Bond film No Time to Die.

It was a breathtaking finale — a moment that captured the raw, cinematic beauty of southern Italy.

From there, we returned to Bari Airport, carrying home not only souvenirs but memories of a region that touches the heart in quiet, unforgettable ways.
