Sailing in Timeless Style: My Queen Mary 2 Experience

Sailing in Timeless Style: My Queen Mary 2 Experience

I‘ll admit it—I never considered myself a ‘Cruiser’.

Like many first-time passengers, I had my preconceptions. I pictured enormous ships packed with thousands of people, endless buffets and rigid itineraries that felt more like package holidays than the style of travel I usually enjoy. As someone who loves boutique hotels, thoughtful design and exploring destinations at my own pace, cruising had never really appealed.

As Cunard's flagship and the world's last true ocean liner, Queen Mary 2 has a reputation unlike any other.

Friends and colleagues who had sailed with Cunard spoke of timeless elegance, exceptional service and the romance of ocean travel, making me wonder if I'd dismissed cruising too quickly.

So, when the opportunity arose to join a five-night voyage from Southampton to Normandy, visiting Le Havre and Cherbourg, I decided it was time to put those assumptions aside.

Rather than flying overseas, I swapped airport queues for champagne, sea views and elegant evenings at sea.

From the moment I stepped aboard, I understood why Queen Mary 2 continues to capture the imagination of travellers around the world. The magnificent Grand Lobby immediately sets the tone, and instead of feeling like a cruise ship, she feels like a floating grand hotel where tradition, luxury and impeccable service take centre stage.

A Warm Welcome at Sea

Embarkation in Southampton was remarkably smooth. Within minutes, I was settled into my Britannia Balcony Stateroom, where a chilled bottle of Cunard Blanc de Blancs was waiting to welcome us aboard.

The cabin immediately felt more like a boutique hotel than a cruise cabin. Warm wood finishes, elegant navy and cream furnishings, a wonderfully comfortable bed and a private sheltered balcony—perfect for unpredictable British or Transatlantic weather—created a peaceful retreat that quickly became my favourite place on the ship.

Each morning began with coffee on the balcony while watching the sea stretch endlessly towards the horizon. There is something incredibly calming about seeing nothing but water in every direction—a rare luxury in today's always-connected world.

The Luxury of Slowing Down

It didn't take long for me to realise this wasn't the cruise I'd imagined.

Instead, I found a beautifully designed ship with timeless character, exceptional dining, fascinating destinations and a pace of travel that encouraged me to slow down and enjoy the journey just as much as the ports of call.

Modern travel often feels rushed. We hurry through airports, race between attractions and constantly check our watches.

Life aboard Queen Mary 2 encourages exactly the opposite.

Days at sea offered endless opportunities to relax or simply follow my curiosity. Whether wandering the beautiful promenade deck, enjoying Cunard's famous afternoon tea, browsing the impressive library, watching the world drift by from a quiet lounge or finding a peaceful corner to read, every space invited you to slow down and savour the experience.

Perhaps the greatest luxury of all was disconnecting from everyday routines. There were no traffic jams, no rushing between appointments, and no pressure to constantly be doing something. Instead, there was space to breathe, reflect and simply enjoy being at sea.

Dining That Became Part of the Experience

Dining aboard Queen Mary 2 was every bit as elegant as I'd hoped.

Evenings in the Britannia Restaurant quickly became one of the highlights of each day. Beneath its dramatic artwork and soaring ceilings, dinner felt like an occasion rather than simply another meal. Beautifully presented dishes, perfectly cooked steaks, indulgent desserts and attentive service made every evening memorable.

For a special treat, we also dined at The Verandah, Cunard's signature steakhouse, and it was undoubtedly one of the culinary highlights of the voyage.

The meal began with delicate asparagus topped with a perfectly crisp hen's egg, a simple yet beautifully executed starter that set the tone for the evening. For the main course, I chose the Porterhouse steak, cooked exactly to my liking and served with a rich, silky Béarnaise sauce that complemented the meat perfectly.

Rather than rushing to dessert, we lingered over The Verandah's wheeled cheese trolley, selecting a variety of artisan cheeses accompanied by perfectly matched accompaniments. It was one of those wonderfully old-fashioned touches that feels increasingly rare and perfectly captures Cunard's commitment to traditional fine dining.

I also loved discovering the Golden Lion Pub, where classic British favourites are given a gourmet twist in a special collaboration with renowned Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed lunch while exploring the ship.

More than the food itself, it was the atmosphere I loved most. Meals weren't rushed. Conversations lingered, the wine continued to flow, and the ever-changing sea became part of the dining experience.

My Dining Highlights

⭐ Best Fine Dining: The Verandah – worth booking before you sail (at a supplement)

⭐ Best Included Restaurant: Britannia Restaurant.

⭐ Best Relaxed Lunch: Golden Lion Pub.

⭐ Don't Miss: Cunard's famous Afternoon Tea, served by white-gloved waiters in the Queens Room.

Evenings with a Touch of Glamour

As evening arrived, the ship transformed once again.

Dressing for dinner became part of the occasion, adding a touch of glamour that is increasingly rare in modern travel. Wearing my navy embroidered evening dress, I found myself embracing a tradition that feels wonderfully timeless.

One misconception I quickly realised was unfounded was the dress code. Smart casual is perfectly acceptable on most evenings, while Gala Evenings are as glamorous as you choose to make them. Whether that's a cocktail dress or black tie, the emphasis is on enjoying the occasion rather than meeting strict rules.

After dinner came cocktails, theatre performances in the Royal Court Theatre and live music throughout the ship.

One evening, the extraordinary Chernov Brothers left the audience spellbound with their breathtaking acrobatic performance. Another evening ended with laughter at the silent disco, where guests danced together wearing glowing headphones. There was even karaoke—although I'll admit that part of the evening is a little hazy in my memory.

Whether you preferred classical music, West End-style productions or simply a quiet drink overlooking the ocean, there was always something happening without the ship ever feeling crowded.

Exploring Normandy with Cunard

One of the things I enjoyed most about this itinerary was that each port offered something completely different while showcasing the beauty and character of Normandy.

Le Havre

Our first stop was Le Havre, a city that pleasantly surprised me.

Completely rebuilt after the Second World War, Le Havre has a very different feel from many French ports. Its bold modern architecture and wide boulevards have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status, making it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in architecture and design.

Rather than rushing between attractions, I enjoyed strolling along the waterfront, exploring independent cafés and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere. One of my favourite discoveries was the vibrant indoor market, bursting with colourful local produce, artisan cheeses, fresh seafood and the unmistakable buzz of everyday French life.

Le Havre also serves as the gateway to many of Normandy's highlights, making it the perfect introduction to the region.

Étretat

Before reaching Étretat, we stopped at the historic Bénédictine Distillery, where we sampled different vintages of Normandy's famous herbal liqueur and learned about its fascinating history.

Then came Étretat.

Standing on the pebble beach looking towards the famous white chalk cliffs and natural sea arch felt almost surreal. It's one of those places you've seen countless times in photographs, yet it still manages to exceed expectations in person.

The dramatic coastline, fresh sea air and peaceful atmosphere made it one of my favourite memories of the trip. Sitting next to the beach with my newfound sailing friends, enjoying a drink and sharing stories from our voyage, perfectly captured the relaxed spirit of the cruise.

Cherbourg

Walking through Cherbourg, it was impossible not to notice how warmly the town welcomed Queen Mary 2.

Shop windows proudly displayed welcome posters celebrating the ship's arrival, local chocolatiers offered discounts to Cunard guests, and cafés buzzed with visitors enjoying the sunshine.

I wandered through colourful streets, browsed artisan cheese shops, enjoyed lunch in a charming French bistro and sampled some of Normandy's local delicacies. It felt like an authentic French port rather than somewhere created purely for tourists.

Design at Every Turn

With my background in art and design, I couldn't help but get completely lost in admiring the ship itself.

Queen Mary 2 balances grandeur with comfort in a way that few ships achieve. The Art Deco influences, sophisticated interiors and thoughtful design create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and luxurious.

From the sculptural artwork in the public spaces to the elegant lighting, sweeping staircases and beautifully proportioned lounges, every corner offers something beautiful to appreciate.

For anyone who loves architecture, interiors or classic design, Queen Mary 2 is a destination in its own right.

Service That Makes the Difference

What impressed me most wasn't simply the elegance of the ship—it was the people.

The crew remembered names, greeted guests with genuine warmth and somehow anticipated what you needed before you even asked.

Every time we returned to our stateroom, Nancy had worked her magic, transforming it into a calm, immaculate retreat, complete with the little Cunard chocolate waiting on the pillow.

It's this attention to detail that transforms a holiday into something truly memorable—especially when you're usually the one at home tidying up after everyone else!

Why Queen Mary 2 Is Unlike Any Other Cruise

By the end of the voyage, I completely understood why so many guests return to Queen Mary 2 time and time again. Dare I say it—I can now confidently call myself a Cunarder.

Queen Mary 2 isn't simply transportation; she is the destination.

She celebrates a style of travel that many of us have forgotten—or perhaps never experienced—where the journey is every bit as rewarding as the places you visit.

Watching the stars from the promenade deck, enjoying leisurely breakfasts overlooking the sea, discovering Normandy's charming ports and ending the voyage beneath a spectacular rainbow during our farewell water salute reminded me why I fell in love with travel in the first place.

It reminded me that the best travel experiences are often the ones you never plan—the assumptions that are challenged, the unexpected friendships you make and the quiet moments watching the horizon disappear into the distance.

For anyone considering a voyage aboard this legendary liner, my advice is simple: don't think of it as just another cruise.

Think of it as an experience.

One that celebrates the golden age of ocean travel while delivering every modern comfort.

It's a journey I'll remember for a very long time—and one I would happily take again.
