My First British Airways Business Class Experience After 42 Years in the Industry

My First British Airways Business Class Experience After 42 Years in the Industry

After 42 years working in the travel industry, I recently experienced something completely new: my first-ever flight in Business Class with British Airways. It’s a milestone I won’t soon forget — and a reminder that no matter how long you’re in this business, there are always new experiences waiting.

The Anticipation

Having spent decades helping others book their dream trips and luxury flights, stepping into Business Class myself felt both exciting and a little surreal. I had a good idea of what to expect on paper — priority check-in, lounge access, a lie-flat seat — but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely.

Check-in and Lounge Access: A Seamless Start

The journey began with priority check-in, which immediately set a more relaxed tone compared to the usual airport rush. Security was swift and efficient as I had Fast Track, and before I knew it, I was settling into the calm of the British Airways lounge. With comfortable seating, a full buffet, and a quiet space to work or unwind, it felt like the holiday had already begun — even before boarding.

Boarding and First Impressions

Boarding was smooth and well-organised, with Business Class passengers called early. Walking onto the aircraft and being directed to my spacious seat was an unforgettable moment. The welcome from the cabin crew was warm and genuine, and within minutes, I had a glass of champagne in hand, feeling thoroughly looked after.

The Seat and Comfort

I was flying in the Club World cabin, and my seat converted into a fully flat bed — a first for me. The seat had plenty of storage, a large entertainment screen, and thoughtful touches like a pillow, blanket, and amenity kit from The White Company.

For someone used to economy seating, the ability to stretch out fully and sleep on a flight was a complete game changer. It transformed the whole experience from simply “getting there” into part of the journey itself.

Dining: Elevated at 35,000 Feet

Dining in Business Class felt closer to a restaurant experience than typical airline food. The menu offered a choice of three courses, beautifully presented and served on real crockery with proper cutlery. I chose a seasonal starter, a perfectly cooked main course, and a decadent dessert — all accompanied by an excellent wine list including Whispering Angel ( a personal favourite of mine). It made the entire flight feel far more indulgent and memorable.

Service: Personal and Professional

Throughout the flight, the crew struck a perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. Nothing felt rushed or impersonal; the service was attentive without being intrusive, which really stood out to me given my many years observing airline service standards.

Reflections on My First Business Class Experience

Flying Business Class with British Airways wasn’t just more comfortable — it genuinely enhanced the entire travel experience. It’s easy to understand why many seasoned travellers choose to upgrade when possible. For me personally, after over four decades in the industry, this first Business Class flight was a reminder that travel still has the power to surprise and delight - no matter how long you‘ve been around it.
