A Sensory Journey Through Marrakech & Beyond

Imagine stepping into a labyrinth of vibrant alleys, where dazzling lights shimmer, silver gleams in market stalls, the rhythmic tap of woodcarvers fills the air, and the scent of fire and spices awakens your senses. This was my introduction to Marrakech—a city just three hours from the UK, yet a world away in every sense.

A Taste of Transformation: Amal Centre

My journey began at Amal, a social enterprise empowering disadvantaged women since 2012. Each year, 30 women undergo an intensive nine-month training, mastering languages and culinary skills to secure brighter futures.  Here, I savoured a fresh salad bursting with vibrant flavours, a richly spiced tagine, and an indulgent Oreo cake that melted in my mouth—a feast of Moroccan hospitality setting the perfect tone for my adventure.

Exploring the Ancient Heart of Marrakech

Guided by Ayoub, our Marrakech souk exploration began at the Koutoubia Mosque, a 900-year-old architectural wonder standing 77 metres tall—the tallest structure in the city, eternally protected from being overshadowed. If it feels familiar, you may have seen its sister, the Almohad-built Giralda in Seville, Spain. Unlike most mosques in Morocco, Koutoubia’s square minaret signals its Berber heritage.

Navigating the maze-like souk, past hidden Riads and carts overflowing with fragrant strawberries (causing what I dubbed the “strawberry jam”), we arrived at the enchanting Secret Garden. Originally transformed in 2006 by two visionary Italians, this hidden oasis boasts an exotic garden filled with flora from around the globe and a serene Islamic garden, where an 11th-century underground irrigation system sustains its lush greenery.

At the heart of Jemaa el-Fnaa, a UNESCO-listed square since 1987, I enjoyed a fresh orange juice from a local vendor before stepping behind the doors of Riad 48. This stylish new boutique hotel (opened October 2024) blends modern simplicity with centuries-old Moroccan warmth. The courtyard’s open roof attracted birds, evoking memories of my stay in Alhambra. Breakfast here? So good, lunch became an afterthought.....although that was never really an option with so much incredible food around each corner!

Evening Elegance at La Maison Arabe

Dinner at La Maison Arabe was pure magic. Candlelight flickered around a grand pool as we dined on delicately spiced Moroccan dishes, raising a toast—“Besaha!”, the local way to say cheers.  The perfect close to my first day in Morocco.

Day Two: A Deeper Dive into Moroccan Culture

The morning started at the Intrepid office, where I met the brilliant team curating once-in-a-lifetime itineraries. With 160 expert guides, they ensure every adventure is truly immersive. My personal guide, Ibrahim, was outstanding.

From here, we ventured into the countryside oasis to enjoy our immersive Moroccan cooking class. Led by the charismatic Chef Youssef, we prepared lamb, chicken, and vegetable tagines in the traditional way alongside three vibrant salads. I watched as Moroccan bread was baked, later enjoying the meal inside a Berber tent, seated on colourful cushions. A local green tea ceremony followed, and, to my joy, I even received a certificate—proof that I (someone who never cooks) could create authentic Moroccan dishes!

Empowering the Future: Education for All

Next, we visited Education for All, a transformative initiative supporting girls from remote villages by providing them with a safe place to stay while they attend school.  Joanna, a dedicated volunteer from Ireland, guided us through the centre, where we met a former student thriving as an entrepreneur.  On the rooftop, sipping green tea with panoramic Atlas Mountain views, we celebrated the success stories of five graduates now working at Intrepid.  A powerful reminder of the positive impact of travel.

A Mountain Retreat: Kasbah Africa

We retreated to Kasbah Africa, nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. My junior suite’s sliding doors framed the breathtaking scenery, an invitation to explore. While the pool was too cool for a dip, the surrounding serene landscape, punctuated by birdsong and the calls of donkeys and peacocks, was pure tranquillity.

The next morning, a scenic hike led us through traditional villages, offering firsthand insight into the resilience of the locals rebuilding after the 2023 earthquake. Along the way, we discovered juniper trees, oleander, mint, and carob before reaching a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. A home-cooked meal, green tea ritual, and bread-making demonstration concluded our trek—warm, fluffy Moroccan bread drizzled with olive oil and salt has never tasted so good!

Before leaving, we learned about Intrepid’s partnership with the High Atlas Foundation, which has planted 6,000 trees to offset the carbon footprint of travellers— an inspiring way to give back to nature.

Final Day: Agafay Desert’s Ultimate Escape

Our last adventure led us to Yes We Camps, a luxury desert retreat in the breathtaking Agafay Desert. The journey itself was mesmerising, with rolling hills, bright green fields, and snow-capped mountains creating picture-perfect moments. Along the way, shepherds guided flocks of sheep along winding roads, a timeless scene.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a shimmering pool in the middle of the desert—no mirage, just pure indulgence. The spacious tents, accommodating up to four guests, offered all the comforts of a boutique hotel, complete with sumptuously oversized beds. Poolside drinks, a feast of fresh salads, and breathtaking sunset views made for an unforgettable afternoon.

To end the trip on a high, we embarked on a camel ride at sunset, followed by traditional Moroccan dancing under a star-filled sky—the most magical way to bid farewell to Morocco.
