When you were growing up, did you ever read “My family and other animals” by Gerald Durrell? It’s a great read and, to commemorate the book’s 60th anniversary what better way than to celebrate than for ITV to commission a new six part drama? Keeley Hawes will head up an impressive cast list as the mother who strives to provide her family with the best life changing opportunities, waving goodbye to England and heading off to the delightful Greek Island of Corfu and the Mediterranean sun.
Gerald Durrell was a life-long conservationist, born in India and spending some of his younger years on this beautiful Greek. His comical and exciting adventures (both with his family and in growing up in the most amazing surroundings) make this book a must read and will leave the reader with an absolute desire to see the island where the young Durrell grew up. Durrell later become a world famous expert in the field of animal conservation. I have visited his legacy, in the form of Jersey Zoo, which was established in 1958, many times. The zoo is an amazing place, looking after and preserving endangered species (the zoo is home to over 130 different species including his much loved gorillas and Lemurs) for the benefit of generations to come – the next logical step for me personally will be to spend some time on the stunning island of Corfu learning more about what so inspired the young Gerald.
Why not join me in getting ahead of the game and book your own adventure before the series goes on air?
