Sustainable Luxury in Majorca: My Visit to Iberostar Hotels
Sustainable Luxury in Majorca: My Visit to Iberostar Hotels
As someone who sells luxury holidays and family travel, I’m frequently shown new and often surprising features and programmes by hotel and travel brands. But I recently visited five of the Iberostar Hotels & Resorts properties in Majorca and, while I was incredibly impressed by the quality of the hotels themselves, what really blew me away were their sustainability initiatives.
It was refreshing to see a hotel group so committed to making travel more sustainable without compromising on luxury, guest experience or family-friendly facilities.
Here are a few of the things that really stood out to me during my visit.
• Commitment to carbon-neutral travel.
• Renewable energy across Spanish hotels.
• Huge reductions in single-use plastics.
• Smart technology helping reduce food waste.
• Sustainability education for children through Star Camp.
• Luxury family holidays with a genuine eco-friendly focus.
🌍 Iberostar’s Commitment to Sustainable Travel
Iberostar Group plans to be carbon neutral across all of its resorts by 2030, and in 2025, the company was included in the prestigious TIME100 list of the world’s most influential companies.
This recognition highlights Iberostar’s positive global impact and its firm commitment to sustainability, responsible tourism and protecting the environment for future generations.
All of their hotels in Spain already operate using renewable electricity, and the company has significantly reduced emissions while continuing to invest heavily in decarbonisation projects and energy efficiency across their resorts.
For anyone looking for more sustainable luxury holidays in Spain, it was genuinely impressive to see how seriously Iberostar are taking this.
🥤 Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
One of the things I loved most was learning that Iberostar eliminated single-use plastics back in 2020.
I was fascinated by their alternative to plastic straws, which are actually made from biscuit — meaning you can eat your straw once you’ve finished your drink! It’s such a simple but clever idea, and honestly, something I had never seen before at any other hotel.
Across the resorts, you’ll also find filtered water refill stations where guests can top up reusable bottles throughout their stay. This initiative alone saves around 76,000 plastic bottles every year, which is an incredible achievement.
I was also really pleased to see recycling bins in guest rooms and throughout the hotels we visited, making it easy for guests to recycle during their holiday too.
🍽️ Smart Technology Reducing Food Waste
Something else I found genuinely impressive was Iberostar’s use of smart technology in their hotel kitchens to help reduce food waste.
Special cameras monitor what is being thrown away and collect data on which meals and ingredients are most popular. This allows chefs and kitchen teams to adapt menus, reduce unnecessary waste and make the restaurants far more efficient and sustainable.
As someone who visits a lot of hotels, this was one of the most innovative sustainability initiatives I’ve personally seen within the travel industry.
🌱 Teaching Children About Sustainability Through Star Camp
Even at the children’s club, Star Camp, sustainability plays an important role.
The programme encourages children to have fun while also learning important values such as caring for the environment, healthy habits, respect for diversity and sustainability.
One of my favourite things I saw was a vegetable garden where children had been growing herbs and vegetables themselves. It felt like such a lovely way to teach younger generations about nature, healthy eating and responsible living while still making it fun.
🌟 Can Luxury Holidays Be More Sustainable?
I came away seriously impressed by the efforts being made by Iberostar to help protect our planet.
Travel can absolutely be done in a more sustainable and environmentally responsible way, and Iberostar is really proving that luxury holidays and eco-friendly travel can go hand in hand.
For anyone looking for eco-friendly hotels in Majorca, sustainable family holidays in Spain or luxury resorts with a genuine commitment to sustainability, Iberostar are definitely leading the way.
