Wandering Through Time: A Perfect Day in Alcudia Old Town
Most people head to Mallorca dreaming of beaches, cocktails, and long sunny days by the sea. And when they think of Alcudia, they picture the family-friendly resort area, big hotels, soft sands, and shallow turquoise water. But tucked just a short ride inland is a completely different world: Alcudia Old Town, a place full of history, charm, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you slow down and savour every moment.
If you’re staying nearby, as we did at the Iberostar Albufera Park, getting there couldn’t be easier. There’s a bus stop right outside the hotel, and for around €3 each, you can hop on and be dropped right at the Old Town walls. No stress, no taxis, just a quick, easy ride into somewhere that feels a million miles from the beachfront buzz.
A Town Wrapped in History
Alcudia Old Town is one of Mallorca’s best preserved medieval gems. Enclosed by 14th-century stone walls, it feels like stepping into another era. Passing through the ancient gates, you instantly sense the shift from modern resort life to a slower, more authentic rhythm.
One of the highlights is walking along the ramparts, where you get sweeping views over terracotta rooftops, church towers, and the distant mountains. It’s the perfect way to start your visit and soak in the atmosphere from above.
Cobbled Streets Made for Wandering
Inside the walls, the Old Town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, honey coloured buildings, and bursts of bougainvillaea. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a plan, just wander, explore, and let the town surprise you.
You’ll stumble across:
• Little artisan shops selling ceramics, leather bags, jewellery, and trinkets
• Cosy cafés with tables spilling into the lanes
• Quiet squares where locals sip coffee in the shade
• Beautiful old mansions and hidden courtyards
It’s peaceful, charming, and perfect for anyone who loves slow travel and discovering places on foot.
Market Days: When the Town Comes Alive
If you can, visit on a Tuesday or Sunday morning, when the Old Town hosts one of Mallorca’s most vibrant markets. The streets fill with stalls selling fresh produce, cheeses, handmade crafts, clothing, and colourful souvenirs.
Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, the atmosphere is worth experiencing, lively, friendly, and full of local flavour.
Food, Wine, and the Joy of Eating Outdoors
Alcudia Old Town is a dream for food lovers. Whether you want tapas, seafood, pizza, or something more refined, you’ll find it here and almost always with outdoor seating.
Some favourites include:
• Sa Portassa – traditional tapas in a cosy setting
• Osteria El Patio – Italian dishes served in a romantic courtyard
• Restaurant S’Arc – Mediterranean flavours with a modern twist
• Ca’n Costa – one of the oldest restaurants in the area, full of character
It’s also a brilliant place to stop for a glass of wine or a cold beer, especially in the early evening when the stone walls glow golden, and the whole town feels warm and atmospheric.
A Sunset to Remember
As the day cools, the Old Town becomes even more magical. Musicians often play in the squares, families wander slowly, and the whole place feels relaxed and welcoming. If you’ve walked the walls earlier in the day, it’s worth climbing them again; the views at sunset are beautiful.
Why Alcudia Old Town Belongs on Your Mallorca Itinerary
Alcudia Old Town is the perfect reminder that Mallorca is so much more than beaches and resorts. It’s full of charm, history, and character, a place where you can wander cobbled streets, shop for unique trinkets, enjoy amazing food, and sip wine in the sunshine.
Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or planning a long, lazy evening, this beautiful walled town is one of Mallorca’s true highlights.
