Skiing at Big White Ski Resort: One of the Best Canada Ski Holidays Near Kelowna
Skiing in Big White Ski Resort – One of the Best Ski Holidays in Canada
If you’re planning a Canadian ski holiday, few destinations offer the magical winter experience I found at Big White Ski Resort. Located in the beautiful Okanagan Valley just outside Kelowna, Big White is widely regarded as one of the best ski resorts in Canada for its powder snow, family-friendly terrain, and convenient ski-in ski-out accommodation.
From the moment I arrived, I could see why the resort has such a strong reputation. Known for its famous “champagne powder” snow and welcoming alpine village, Big White offers an unforgettable experience for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
Why Choose Big White for Your Canadian Ski Holiday?
When travellers search for the best places to ski in Canada, Big White consistently ranks among the top resorts, and after visiting myself, I can completely understand why. The mountain receives over 7.5 metres (24 feet) of snowfall every winter, creating incredible conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
With more than 2,700 acres of skiable terrain and over 100 marked runs, there is an impressive variety of slopes for every level of skier.
One of the things I enjoyed most during my visit was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and great views across the mountains of British Columbia.
Ski Terrain for All Ability Levels
One of the biggest advantages of skiing at Big White is the variety of terrain available.
Beginner skiers will find gentle slopes and excellent ski schools.
Intermediate skiers can enjoy long, cruisy runs that are perfect for building confidence and improving technique.
Advanced skiers and snowboarders can explore alpine bowls, glades, and steep powder runs.
This mix of terrain makes Big White a fantastic destination for family ski holidays in Canada, where everyone can enjoy the mountain at their own pace.
Famous Champagne Powder Snow
Big White is famous worldwide for its Okanagan Champagne Powder, and after skiing in it myself, I can see why it’s so well known. The snow is incredibly light and dry, making every run feel smooth and effortless.
Unlike heavier snow you sometimes find at other resorts, this powder makes skiing feel almost effortless and incredibly enjoyable.
Thanks to its high elevation and reliable snowfall, the ski season typically runs from late November through April, making it one of the most dependable destinations for a Canadian ski holiday package.
Ski-In Ski-Out Village Accommodation
Another highlight of my stay was the ski-in ski-out village. Many accommodations allow you to step straight outside and ski directly onto the slopes, which makes the whole experience incredibly convenient.
After a day on the mountain, the village has a fantastic après-ski atmosphere, with plenty of restaurants, cosy bars, cafés, and shops where visitors can relax and soak up the alpine environment.
For travellers looking for ski-in ski-out accommodation in Canada, Big White offers some of the most convenient and enjoyable options.
Winter Activities Beyond Skiing
Although skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions, Big White offers plenty of other winter activities to enjoy.
During my visit, I saw families and groups enjoying activities such as:
Snowshoeing through scenic forest trails
Ice skating in the village centre
Snow tubing, which is great fun for families and children
Horse-drawn sleigh rides through the snowy landscape
These additional activities make Big White a great option for family winter holidays in Canada, even for those who may not ski every day.
Getting to Big White is Simple
Getting to Big White is surprisingly easy. Most travellers fly into Kelowna International Airport, which is approximately one hour from the resort.
International flights connect to Kelowna via major hubs such as Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle. From the airport, shuttle services and private transfers make the journey to the mountain straightforward and stress-free.
This easy access is another reason why Big White is considered one of the most convenient ski resorts in British Columbia.
Another Reason Big White Ski Resort Stands Out
Another reason Big White is so highly regarded is its reputation for having one of the best ski instructor training programmes in the world. Many aspiring instructors travel from across the globe to train and qualify here thanks to the resort’s excellent snow conditions, varied terrain, and high teaching standards. So if you‘re joining ski school or booking private lessons, you‘ll be in good hands.
On a personal note, this destination means a great deal to me as well. My own son trained here and qualified as a ski instructor at Big White, and he now works on the mountain. Seeing first-hand the quality of the training and the professionalism of the instructors only reinforced my belief that Big White is not only a fantastic place to ski, but also a world-class place to learn and develop skiing skills.
