Connecting Flights
Connecting Flights
I often get asked how connecting flights work, and when you haven’t done one before, the idea of it can be a little daunting, so come along on a connecting flight with me.
Dubai > Munich > Bologna
First things first, arrive on time at your departure airport and make your way to the check-in / bag drop desk for your flight. For most flights, you are able to check in online in the 24-72 hours prior and will be able to download your boarding passes; alternatively, you can still check in at the airport, where they can also print physical boarding cards for you. You will be checked in for all flights too.
When you drop your luggage at the desk, they will confirm your final destination airport; you will not see your cases again until you arrive, meaning the airport connection is a seamless transfer without having to check in or collect baggage, etc. You simply need to make your way from one gate to the next.
After checking in, head through airport security as normal and then proceed to the relevant departure gate accordingly for your first flight.
Once you arrive at your connecting airport, you will then need to head to the next departure gate. You will find this information on the big screens as normal; if you have the airlines app, you will most likely receive a notification with this information too. Sometimes, you may need to go through a security area again depending on the airport, & for arrival into EU airports, you will go through passport control here; this will be on your journey to the next departure gate.
Once your passport is stamped, continue on your way to your gate and get ready for takeoff.
Upon arrival into your final destination, after heading through passport control (unless landing into another EU airport as this has already been completed), you will then exit out into the baggage claim area to collect your luggage and be ready to start your holiday.
A seamless experience from start to finish. Airports are always well signposted, and there’s plenty of staff around to ask if you are ever unsure too. Our flight home from Dubai was with Lufthansa to Munich and then Air Dolomiti back into Bologna. Over the years, I’ve travelled on many connecting flights with multiple airlines via different airports and can assure you that the full process works the same in any airport. Any questions, please feel free to let me know :)
