If you think cruising isn’t for you, it might be time to think again

For many travellers, cruising still carries outdated assumptions. Crowded ships, rigid itineraries and holidays that feel anything but personal. But the cruise industry has quietly evolved, and what it offers today is worlds away from what many imagine.

I recently collaborated with Aspire Magazine to explore why cruising is firmly back on the radar and why it may surprise even the most sceptical travellers. From boutique-style ships and immersive itineraries to elevated dining and thoughtfully designed experiences, modern cruising is redefining what it means to explore the world in comfort and style.

If you think cruising isn’t for you, it might be time to think again.

Cruising has quietly had a bit of a renaissance over the past few years. Once associated mainly with traditional itineraries and large ships, the industry has evolved dramatically, offering a huge range of experiences that appeal to first-time cruisers, seasoned travellers and even those who never imagined a cruise would be for them!

From my own experience, one of the biggest surprises for many people is just how varied cruising has become.

From intimate, ultra-luxury ships with just a few hundred guests, to expedition vessels exploring some of the most remote corners of the world, or larger ships packed with dining, entertainment and activities, there’s a style of cruising to suit almost every type of traveller.

River cruising, in particular, has seen huge growth. Sailing along iconic waterways like the Danube, Rhine, Seine, or Douro offers a wonderfully immersive way to travel. You arrive right in the heart of historic cities, often stepping straight off the ship into the destination itself. It’s an elegant and relaxed way to explore multiple countries without constantly packing and unpacking.

That simplicity is a big part of the appeal. You unpack once and wake up somewhere new almost every day. No repeated airport queues, no complicated logistics, just a seamless way to see the world.

Another shift I’ve noticed is how much more destination-focused cruises have become. Longer stays, overnight port visits and access to smaller harbours all help create a more immersive experience.

Food has also become a real highlight. The days of standard buffet dining are long gone, with many ships now offering speciality restaurants, collaborations with well-known chefs and menus inspired by the regions you’re visiting.

Of course, trends continue to shape the industry. Expedition cruising is booming, with more travellers drawn to remote, nature-led adventures in places like Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galápagos. At the same time, luxury cruise lines are investing in ships that feel more like boutique hotels than traditional liners.

For many of my clients, choosing the right cruise can feel overwhelming at first, and a little guidance can make all the difference. Two itineraries that look similar on paper can offer completely different experiences, and details like ship size, timing and even cabin location can make a big difference.

My biggest tip? Don’t assume cruising is one-size-fits-all. The right cruise can be an incredible way to travel – Certain ships, routes and times of year work particularly well - and with a bit of expert insight, it can easily go from good to unforgettable.
