Amsterdam: The Perfect City Break by Rail
Some cities instantly make you slow down, and for me, Amsterdam is definitely one of them.
Earlier this year, my husband and I swapped airports, security queues, and baggage carousels for something much more relaxing: travelling from London to Amsterdam in Eurostar Premier Class.
From the moment we settled into our seats, our mini-break felt like it had already begun. There was no rushing, no long transfer times and no need to worry about liquids or luggage restrictions. Just a comfortable journey watching the scenery change as we headed towards one of Europe‘s most charming cities.
A Stylish Base in the Heart of the City
For our three-night stay, we checked into the Kimpton De Witt Hotel.
Location is everything on a city break, and this hotel couldn‘t have been better placed. Just a short walk from Central Station, it provided the perfect base for exploring Amsterdam‘s beautiful streets, canals and hidden corners.
Amsterdam is one of those cities where you can happily spend hours simply wandering.
Getting Lost (In The Best Possible Way)
The beauty of Amsterdam lies in its simplicity.
The city is incredibly walkable, and every route seems to lead to another picturesque canal, historic bridge or waterside café. We crossed the canals countless times during our stay, each one offering another postcard-worthy view.
The narrow houses, bicycles lined along the waterways and the gentle pace of life all combine to create an atmosphere that's difficult not to fall in love with.
Unlike some city breaks where you feel pressured to tick attractions off a list, Amsterdam encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy being there.
Seeing The City From The Water
Of course, no visit would be complete without a canal cruise!
Seeing Amsterdam from the water gives you an entirely different perspective of the city. Drifting beneath historic bridges and past elegant canal houses, it becomes easy to understand why Amsterdam's waterways are recognised around the world.
It's also a fantastic way to get your bearings and appreciate the layout of the city while learning a little more about its fascinating history.
Sometimes the most famous experiences really are worth doing, and this was certainly one of them.
Beyond Amsterdam: A Day Trip to Zaandam and Zaanse Schans
One of the things I love about Amsterdam is how easy it is to explore beyond the city itself.
During our stay, we hopped on a train to Zaandam, a colourful and characterful town just a short journey from Amsterdam Central Station. With its distinctive architecture and relaxed atmosphere, it felt very different from the bustling canals of Amsterdam and gave us a glimpse of everyday Dutch life.
From there, we continued to Zaanse Schans, one of the Netherlands' most iconic attractions.
If you've ever pictured Holland with traditional windmills, green wooden houses, waterways and picture-perfect scenery, this is probably what you've imagined.
Walking around the historic windmills and watching them turn against the skyline felt like stepping back in time. It was fascinating to see how these working windmills once played such an important role in Dutch history and industry.
What struck me most was how simple the whole trip was. Within a little more than half an hour from Amsterdam, we had swapped city streets and canals for a quintessentially Dutch landscape that couldn't have felt more different.
Why Amsterdam Works So Well
What makes Amsterdam such a fantastic destination is its versatility.
It works equally well for couples, friends, solo travellers and even families. Whether you're interested in history, food, shopping, culture or simply soaking up the atmosphere, there's something here for everyone. ...add in the convenience of travelling by Eurostar, and you have a city break that's both easy and rewarding.
Final Thoughts
After three nights in Amsterdam, I returned home reminded that sometimes the best holidays don't have to involve a long-haul flight or a packed itinerary.
A comfortable rail journey, a beautiful city, plenty of walking, a memorable canal cruise and a visit to the Dutch countryside combined to create exactly the kind of break we both enjoy.
Amsterdam has a way of getting under your skin. It's relaxed yet vibrant, historic yet modern, and somehow manages to feel both energising and calming at the same time.
Would I return?... Absolutely.
And next time, I'll probably still find myself stopping every few minutes to take yet another photo of a canal!
Thinking about an Amsterdam city break or travelling by Eurostar for the first time? I'd be delighted to share my experience and help you plan the perfect escape.
