River Cruise Expert - An Insight onboard Viva Enjoy
River Cruise Expert - An Insight onboard Viva Enjoy
I’ve recently returned from my very first CLIA River Cruise Conference, and it truly opened my eyes to just how special river cruising can be. Being able to step on board several different ships, explore their layouts, and experience the atmosphere firsthand was incredibly valuable, and it made me even more excited to share my own river cruise experience.
Just before the conference, I was lucky enough to spend five nights on board Viva Enjoy, sailing through Düsseldorf, Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Amsterdam. It may have been a short itinerary, but it was one of those trips that stays with you—the kind where you slow down, take everything in, and really enjoy the journey as much as the destinations.
Settling In: My Cabin Experience
From the moment I stepped into my cabin, I felt instantly at ease. The design is modern and calming, with soft neutral tones and warm lighting that make it feel more like a boutique hotel room than a cruise cabin.
I stayed in a stateroom with a French balcony, and honestly, that feature made such a difference. Waking up, opening the floor-to-ceiling doors, and watching the river drift by, sometimes with quaint towns, other times with wide open landscapes, was one of my favourite parts of the trip. It’s such a simple thing, but it really connects you to the journey.
Space is, of course, more compact than on ocean cruises, but everything is thoughtfully laid out. There’s just enough room for everything you need, without ever feeling cramped. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was modern and well-designed, and having the minibar restocked daily was a lovely little bonus.
Dining Onboard: A Real Highlight
Food is always a big part of any trip for me, and Viva Enjoy definitely delivered.
Most of my meals were in the Riverside Restaurant, where I quickly fell into a lovely routine. Relaxed breakfasts, easy lunches, and then something to look forward to in the evenings. Dinner felt like a bit of an occasion each night, with multi-course menus that often reflected the regions we were travelling through.
What I really appreciated was the flexibility. There was no pressure or rigid structure—you could dine when you liked and take your time.
I also enjoyed spending time in the Bistro, especially during the day when you could grab something lighter and sit out on the terrace if the weather allowed. It had a much more casual feel, which was a nice contrast.
One evening, I tried the Moments Restaurant, and it genuinely felt like a “treat night.” The Italian-inspired dishes were delicious, and the more intimate setting made it feel a bit more special—without any extra cost, which is quite rare on cruises.
Evenings: Calm, Cosy, and Sociable
If you’re expecting big theatre shows and late-night parties, this isn’t that kind of cruise.
Evenings onboard were relaxed and sociable. Most nights, I found myself in the lounge, where there was live music, usually a pianist or singer, creating a really lovely atmosphere. It was the kind of setting where you could chat with other guests, enjoy a drink, and just unwind after a day of exploring.
There were also little touches like quizzes or themed evenings, but nothing felt over-the-top. There didn‘t feel any pressure to dress up, but of course, if, like me, you enjoy dressing up for dinner, then you were definitely not out of place.
Exploring Each Destination
One of the things I loved most about this itinerary was how easy everything felt.
We docked in really central locations, which meant you could step off the ship and be straight into the heart of each city. In places like Antwerp and Amsterdam, I found it so easy to explore on foot, wandering through streets, stopping at cafés, and just soaking up the atmosphere.
There were guided excursions available, from walking tours to more specialised experiences, and these are great if you want structure and deeper insight. But I personally liked mixing it up—doing a guided tour in one port, then exploring independently in another.
Each stop had its own character, but the real joy was the journey in between—sailing quietly along the river, watching the scenery change, and never feeling rushed.
Who I Think This Is Perfect For
After both my time onboard Viva Enjoy and my experience at the CLIA conference, I have a much clearer sense of who river cruising really suits.
This is perfect for those who enjoy a slower pace, who like to explore without the stress of constant packing and unpacking, and who appreciate good food, comfortable surroundings, and meaningful destinations.
It’s ideal for couples and solo travellers, and especially for those who enjoy walking, culture, and a more relaxed style of travel. If you’re looking for high-energy entertainment or something geared heavily towards families, this might not be the best fit—but if you want something calm, immersive, and easy, it’s a wonderful choice.
Final Reflections
Looking back, this trip felt like a perfect introduction not just to Viva Enjoy, but to river cruising as a whole.
Between my time onboard and the insights I gained at the CLIA River Cruise Conference, I’ve come away with a real appreciation for this style of travel. It’s not about rushing from place to place—it’s about enjoying the journey, the scenery, and those quieter, more meaningful moments along the way.
For me, it was waking up to a new view each morning, wandering through beautiful cities in the afternoon, and ending the day with good food and gentle music as the river carried us onward.
If that sounds like your kind of travel, then river cruising and Viva Enjoy in particular are definitely worth considering.
Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to hear more about my experience or explore river cruise options for yourself. I’d love to help you find the right one.
