The Last House

The Last House

Introduction

This iconic beach house has been beautifully designed for an idyllic escape in Sri Lanka, boasting direct beach access and within reach of several UNESCO sites.

The Last House

The last project of  Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, The Last House is a remarkable beachfront villa nestled on Tangalle's coastline. Inside the property, the rooms are the perfect backdrop to a number of antique and contemporary furnishings, art and fabrics. The villa includes five very comfortable and spacious bedrooms. 'Na' is a large double bedroom on the ground floor, overlooking a small lagoon and views over the beach, complete with an en suite. 'Atteriya' is a double room with extraordinary sea views, an en suite and direct access to the front and rear garden. The third ground floor room is 'Moonamal', with stunning sea views, access to the garden and an en suite. Head upstairs to discover the 'Cinnamon Hill' en suite rooms. The twin room is large and spacious, overlooking the sea and garden, with a cast-iron bathtub and twin vanities. The double room has similar views, a cast-iron tub and a balcony overlooking the beach, which is well-suited for private dining upon request. Private dining can also be arranged on the verranda or on the beach for a romantic evening.

A stay at The Last House can be as relaxed or active as you like.  Simply relax in a quiet corner of the tropical gardens, stroll or jog Mawella’s two kilometre expanse of sandy beach. Borrow a board for surfing or body boarding in the Indian Ocean. Hire a small fishing-boat for a day of fishing or snorkelling around the nearby bays and beaches. Visit Mulgirigala, a sacred Buddhist site with ancient cave temples and superb panoramic views.  Explore Tangalle’s buzzy fish market and harbour, local villages and the wildlife-filled surroundings by bicycle. Play volleyball, badminton or croquet, or challenge the staff to a game of cricket. For wildife there are guided boat trips in Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary (40 minutes) or safaris in Bundala National Park which is further but great for winter migratory bird species. We also recommended seeking out wildlife on a day safari to Udawalawe or Yala national parks or taking a half-day trip to Mirissa for whale/dolphin watching (seasonal). Surfing is fun at Hiriketya (15 minutes) and there are also top restaurants here.

With its unique architecture and location, discreet and attentive team of staff, and excellent chef, this villa is truly the most perfect retreat for an island escape. Early booking essential.
