Splendid Sorrento

If you love good food, stunning scenery and history then Sorrento and this lovely Italian coastline is well worth a visit. There is so much to do here, you really will be spoilt for choice! The 'Amalfi Drive', taking in Positano and Ravello has the most breathtaking scenery and our tour guide certainly knew his stuff with a bit of humour thrown in too, you needed that to take your mind off the winding roads and sheer drops! On another day we took a boat trip over to Capri, a great place to wander around the narrow streets and take in all the designer shops....followed by a glass of prosecco whilst people watching! The highlight of Capri for us, however, was the Monte Solaro chairlift in Anacapri which takes you to Capri's highest point. Once we had managed to climb aboard the moving, open air chairlift, it was like an oasis of calm and I could have stayed there all day enjoying the wonderful scenery. You can also visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, we chose the latter as it is said to be better preserved than Pompeii. It did not disappoint and it's both chilling and fascinating to imagine what happened here in 79AD when Vesuvius erupted. We also felt the need to climb up to the rim of Vesuvius and even though it was 30 degrees and a fair old climb, it was well worth it. (Top tip...wear proper shoes not sandals as I did....the path is made up of tiny stones so I was constantly having to shake them out ! ) We decided to stay on a half board basis which was lovely and waiter service too which we like. The hotel restaurant had stunning views over the bay of Sorrento as did our room. Bed and breakfast option would be equally good as the narrow streets are filled with inviting cafes and restaurants serving the best Italian food and lots of local shops...a great place to take an evening stroll and soak up the local atmosphere.
