Discovering Sani Resort, Halkidiki: Five Luxury Hotels, Seven Kilometres of Beach and Something for Everyone
I have just returned from an amazing trip to an area of Greece I knew very little about before visiting – Halkidiki. What a wonderful surprise it turned out to be! Beautiful sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, fragrant pine forests and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere made this a destination that really captured my heart.
We were visiting Sani Resort, an impressive luxury resort on the Kassandra peninsula in northern Greece. I had heard wonderful things about it, but seeing it for myself was something else entirely. Whether you are looking for an action-packed family holiday, a romantic escape or a luxurious break where you can simply relax and unwind, Sani has so much to offer.
First, let’s discover Halkidiki.
Halkidiki is in northern Greece, southeast of Thessaloniki, and is famous for its unusual shape, with three peninsulas extending into the Aegean Sea. These are Kassandra, Sithonia and the Athos coastline. Each has its own character, from lively beach resorts and stylish marinas to secluded coves, traditional villages and beautiful natural landscapes.
Sani Resort is situated on Kassandra, the westernmost peninsula, which is particularly popular for its sandy beaches, clear waters, excellent hotels and beachside dining. It is a wonderful choice for anyone wanting the beauty of Greece with the added comfort of a luxury resort.
One of the things I loved most about Sani was how green the surroundings were. Rather than being surrounded by buildings and busy roads, the resort sits within an extensive natural estate of approximately 1,000 acres, with pine forests, wetlands and walking trails alongside the coastline. It feels peaceful and secluded, yet there is always something happening if you want a little more activity.
The area is also known for its wildlife. The nearby wetlands attract a variety of bird species, making this an interesting destination for nature lovers as well as sun-seekers. If you enjoy exploring on foot or by bicycle, the forest trails offer a lovely alternative to spending every day on the beach.
And speaking of beaches, Sani boasts approximately seven kilometres of beautiful sandy coastline, with seven individual beaches recognised for their Blue Flag status. The shallow, clear waters are particularly appealing for families with younger children, while the spacious beach areas also make it easy to find a quieter spot to relax.
For anyone flying into the region, Thessaloniki International Airport is the main gateway, with the transfer to Sani taking around an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic and your transfer arrangements.
Sani Resort – one destination, five very different hotels
What makes Sani particularly special is that it is not simply one hotel. It is a collection of five five-star properties, each with its own personality, style and atmosphere.
The five hotels are Sani Beach, Sani Club, Sani Dunes, Porto Sani and Sani Asterias. They are spread across the estate, with the glamorous Sani Marina providing a central meeting point for dining, shopping and evening entertainment.
The beauty of staying here is that you can choose the hotel that best suits your holiday style while enjoying the wider resort experience. Depending on your package and the individual activity or restaurant, some experiences may incur an additional charge, so it is always worth checking the details before travelling.
The dine-around concept is a real highlight. There is an impressive choice of restaurants serving everything from Mediterranean favourites and fresh seafood to international cuisine and more refined dining experiences. Rather than feeling tied to one hotel restaurant, you can enjoy different settings throughout your stay.
The Marina is particularly lovely in the evening. Think elegant yachts, boutique shops, inviting bars and restaurants, and the wonderful smell of food drifting through the piazza. There is even a crêperie for a sweet treat after dinner! It has a sophisticated atmosphere without feeling too formal, and it is a lovely place to wander after a day in the sunshine.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the five hotels and what makes each one different.
1. Sani Beach – the best choice for active families
Sani Beach is the largest of the five hotels, with a lively atmosphere and a fantastic beachfront position. With a wide range of accommodation, swimming pools, restaurants and family facilities, it is a great option for families who want plenty to do throughout their holiday.
This is also the main hub for many of the resort’s sporting and adventure activities, making it particularly appealing for children and teenagers who like to keep busy.
There is an impressive choice of activities, including tennis at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre, football, cycling and the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. The Sani Treetop Adventure course offers another exciting option for those who enjoy a little adventure among the trees. Availability, age restrictions and charges vary by activity, so these are worth checking when booking.
The cycling facilities are another lovely feature. The resort’s trails provide a great way to explore the estate, and bikes and balance bikes for the toddlers can be hired for guests who want to discover more of the surroundings at their own pace. Electric bikes are also an option, making it easier to cover more ground.
Younger children are well catered for, too, with play areas, child-friendly pools and organised activities. The resort also offers children‘s clubs, giving parents the opportunity to enjoy a little downtime while the children have fun.
Although Sani Beach is particularly suited to active families, its beachside setting and extensive facilities mean adults can enjoy it just as much. It is the hotel I would look at first for families who want a lively base with lots of choice on their doorstep.
My verdict: Ideal for families with school-age children and teenagers, particularly those who enjoy sports, adventure and an action-packed holiday.
2. Sani Club – surrounded by nature
At the other end of the resort, Sani Club offers a different atmosphere. Surrounded by greenery and set on a hillside, it feels more connected to nature and has a wonderfully relaxed character.
The setting is one of its biggest attractions. With pine trees, Mediterranean vegetation and lovely sea views, it is a great choice for anyone who appreciates a quieter environment and enjoys getting out for a walk.
Because of the hillside location, there can be more walking between some areas of the hotel. However, resort buggies are available to help guests get around, which is useful for families with little ones or anyone who prefers not to walk uphill in the heat.
Sani Club is still very much a family-friendly hotel, with its own pools, dining options and children‘s facilities. Guests can also enjoy the wider resort's activities, making it possible to combine peaceful surroundings with more energetic days elsewhere.
I particularly like the idea of starting the morning with a walk through the surrounding greenery before heading to the beach or enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the sea.
My verdict: A lovely option for families and couples who prefer a greener, more tranquil setting, with the wider resort's facilities still within reach.
3. Sani Dunes – contemporary luxury and relaxation
This was where I stayed, and I immediately loved its more relaxed atmosphere.
Sani Dunes has a contemporary, understated style, with elegant low-rise buildings arranged around beautifully designed pool areas. Compared with the busier family atmosphere of Sani Beach, it felt calmer during my visit, although families with children were certainly there too.
The rooms were immaculate, and there was a good choice of accommodation in different sizes and layouts. It is the sort of hotel where you can settle into a slower pace, spend time by the pool, enjoy a leisurely lunch and simply make the most of being on holiday.
The standout feature is the spectacular heated swimming pool, which the resort describes as the largest heated swimming pool in Greece, measuring approximately 3,500 square metres. It creates a real focal point for the hotel, with the beach just beyond.
I loved the balance here: a sophisticated setting without feeling stuffy, and a relaxed atmosphere without compromising on luxury. It would suit couples looking for a stylish escape, as well as families who prefer a more contemporary hotel environment.
Of course, staying at Sani Dunes does not mean missing out on the rest of the resort. You can still head to the Marina for dinner, explore the other beaches or book activities elsewhere on the estate.
My verdict: My choice for guests who want contemporary luxury, a spectacular pool and a more laid-back holiday atmosphere.
4. Porto Sani – relaxed luxury for families with younger children
Porto Sani is located close to the Marina, making it particularly convenient for guests who enjoy being within easy reach of the restaurants, boutiques and evening atmosphere.
The hotel has a lovely Mediterranean feel, with suites designed to provide space and comfort. It is especially appealing to families with younger children who want the convenience of family-friendly facilities without sacrificing the sense of luxury.
Although it is not positioned directly along the main stretch of beachfront in the same way as some of the other properties, guests have access to nearby beach areas. This means you can enjoy both pool time and days by the sea.
The lagoon-style pool is a lovely feature, and younger guests are well catered for with child-friendly swimming facilities, including a splash area. The suite-style accommodation also makes Porto Sani a practical option for families who appreciate extra living space.
Its location is another real plus. Being close to the Marina means that an evening stroll for dinner or an ice cream is easy to incorporate into your holiday routine, without needing to travel far.
My verdict: A great choice for families with babies, toddlers and younger children who value spacious accommodation, a relaxed atmosphere and easy access to the Marina.
5. Sani Asterias – exclusive beachfront luxury
Sani Asterias is the smallest and most intimate of the five properties, offering an exclusive, boutique-style experience for guests seeking a little extra privacy and luxury.
Its beachfront setting, close to the Marina, combines the best of both worlds: a more secluded atmosphere for relaxing, with restaurants and evening entertainment nearby.
The accommodation centres on spacious suites and residences, making it particularly attractive for families who want room to spread out. Larger residences can be ideal for multigenerational holidays, where grandparents, parents and children can enjoy time together while still having their own space.
It is also worth considering for guests travelling with a nanny or requiring a more tailored arrangement, depending on the accommodation selected.
The atmosphere is refined and peaceful, with an emphasis on personal service and an exclusive beach experience. There is a more limited restaurant choice within the hotel itself than at some of the larger properties, but the wider resort's dine-around offering gives guests plenty of alternatives.
For me, this is the property to consider when privacy, spacious accommodation and an intimate luxury setting are top priorities.
My verdict: Best suited to guests seeking a more exclusive experience, including families wanting larger residences and couples looking for a quieter, premium stay.
Which Sani hotel should you choose?
One of the things I particularly liked about Sani is that the five hotels are genuinely different. The right choice depends on the type of holiday you want, rather than simply choosing the most luxurious-looking property.
For active families and teenagers: Sani Beach, with its extensive sporting and adventure facilities.
For nature lovers and a peaceful setting: Sani Club, with its hillside location and greener surroundings.
For contemporary style and poolside relaxation: Sani Dunes, my own base during the trip.
For families with younger children: Porto Sani, with spacious suites and child-friendly facilities.
For exclusive luxury and larger residences: Sani Asterias, with its intimate atmosphere and prime beachfront location.
The good news is that whichever property you choose, you can enjoy much of the wider Sani experience, subject to the terms of your package and the availability or charges associated with individual facilities.
More than just a beach holiday
It would be easy to spend your entire stay at Sani relaxing by the pool or on the beach, but there is so much more to discover.
For active guests, the sporting facilities include tennis, football, cycling, watersports and adventure experiences. The forest trails are ideal for walking and exploring, while the beaches provide opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding and simply enjoying the beautiful Aegean coastline.
Nature lovers can discover the surrounding wetlands and woodland, while those interested in local history may enjoy visiting the nearby Byzantine Tower of Stavronikitas, an important landmark in the Sani area.
If you enjoy exploring beyond your hotel, Halkidiki has plenty to offer. The traditional villages, coastal towns and beaches of the Kassandra peninsula make for interesting outings, while Sithonia, the middle peninsula, is particularly well known for its dramatic coastline, secluded coves and turquoise waters.
Thessaloniki is another option for a day trip if you want to combine your beach holiday with a little city sightseeing, shopping and Greek history. It is a vibrant city with a fascinating past and a wonderful food scene, although you will want to allow sufficient time for the journey.
Back at the resort, the summer entertainment programme adds another dimension to a stay. Sani is known for its live music and cultural events, including the Sani Festival, which brings performances to the area during the summer season. Dates and programmes vary each year, so it is worth checking what is scheduled for your travel dates.
The dining experience – a real highlight
For me, the choice of restaurants is one of Sani's biggest selling points.
The Marina is the natural place to head in the evening, with its stylish setting, boutique shops and restaurants overlooking the yachts. It is the perfect place for a relaxed wander before dinner, followed by a drink or a crêpe.
The wider resort offers a varied dining scene, from casual family-friendly meals to more sophisticated dining experiences. Depending on your chosen package, the dine-around programme can allow you to experience different restaurants during your stay, which is a real advantage for anyone who enjoys variety.
I would recommend checking the precise dine-around inclusions before travelling, as participating restaurants, reservations, supplements and exclusions can vary.
For food lovers, Sani also hosts Sani Gourmet, a culinary event associated with guest chefs and special dining experiences. If your visit coincides with the programme, it could be a wonderful addition to your holiday.
A resort that values its natural surroundings
Another aspect worth mentioning is Sani's emphasis on the natural environment. The resort's extensive estate incorporates protected natural areas, pine forests and wetlands, providing a beautiful backdrop to the hotels and beaches.
This gives Sani a different feel from a resort built entirely around hotel buildings and swimming pools. There is space to explore, greenery between the accommodation and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
The Sani Green sustainability initiative also reflects the resort's stated commitment to environmental management. For guests who appreciate nature as much as luxury, this is an appealing part of the overall experience.
Is Sani Resort worth visiting?
For me, Sani is a destination that offers much more than a beautiful beach and a five-star hotel.
It combines luxury accommodation with excellent dining, a wide choice of activities, lovely beaches and a setting that feels connected to the natural landscape. The fact that the five hotels have different personalities is particularly useful, as it means the resort can cater to a wide range of holidaymakers.
Families can fill their days with sport and adventure, couples can find quieter corners for relaxation, and larger families can choose accommodation that gives everyone room to enjoy their holiday.
It is worth remembering that this is a premium resort, so I would recommend looking carefully at what is included in your package and budgeting for any activities, dining supplements or experiences you particularly want to enjoy.
But if you are looking for a high-quality Greek holiday where you can combine relaxation, great food, beautiful scenery and plenty to do, Sani Resort deserves a place on your shortlist.
My final thoughts
I arrived in Halkidiki not knowing quite what to expect, and I left with a completely new appreciation for this beautiful part of Greece.
Sani Resort impressed me with its setting, the variety of the five hotels, the beautiful beaches and the sheer amount of choice available. Staying at Sani Dunes gave me the chance to experience the resort's more relaxed side, while exploring the wider estate showed just how much there is on offer.
My biggest piece of advice? Choose your hotel according to the holiday you want, rather than assuming that one property will suit everyone. Each has its own character, and that is precisely what makes Sani so appealing.
Whether you are planning a family adventure, a special celebration or a luxurious escape in the Greek sunshine, Sani Resort is a destination I would be delighted to recommend exploring.
