Discover River Cruising First Hand- Amsterdam
What I Learned Visiting River Cruise Ships in Amsterdam
Over the past few days I’ve been in Amsterdam attending the River Cruise Conference, where I had the opportunity to step onboard a number of river cruise ships and spend time speaking with the cruise lines themselves.
One of the most valuable parts of attending events like this is the chance to experience the ships first-hand. Brochures and websites are helpful, but nothing replaces actually walking the decks, seeing the cabins, experiencing the atmosphere and understanding the small details that make each cruise line different.
River cruising has grown enormously in recent years, and what really stood out to me this week is just how diverse the river cruise market has become. From contemporary ships to elegant luxury vessels, there truly is something to suit different styles of customers!
Experiencing Life Onboard
During the visit I had the opportunity to stay overnight on two ships, which gives a much better feel for what the experience is really like for guests.
On Avalon View, the focus is very much on the scenery. The ship’s Panorama Suites feature wall-to-wall windows that open up to create what feels like a balcony across the whole room, allowing guests to enjoy the ever-changing river views from the comfort of their suite.
Later in the trip I also experienced an overnight stay on Riverside Debussy, a truly stunning luxury river ship often described as offering a six-star experience. The décor is elegant and refined, with beautifully designed suites, excellent dining and an atmosphere that feels more like a boutique hotel than a cruise ship.
A Variety of River Cruise Styles
Alongside the overnight stays, I was also able to visit a range of other ships, each offering something slightly different.
AmaSerena offers a classic river cruising experience with spacious cabins, welcoming public areas and a relaxed onboard atmosphere that many customers love.
Emerald Luna has a sleek, modern design and a particularly clever feature: an indoor pool that transforms into a cinema in the evening.
TUI Maya offers a contemporary and relaxed style of river cruising and great value for travellers looking to explore Europe’s rivers comfortably. A new sister ship, TUI Elara, is also scheduled to launch on the Rhine in summer 2027.
Luxury river cruise line Uniworld has also introduced a beautiful new ship, Emilie, which immediately stands out for its stylish, boutique-hotel décor and elegant design.
British cruise line Riviera’s Geoffrey Chaucer offers a very comfortable and traditional river cruise experience, known for excellent food and thoughtfully designed itineraries.
Meanwhile Amadeus Riva impressed with its sleek modern styling and sophisticated atmosphere, creating a contemporary boutique feel onboard.
Why River Cruising Appeals to So Many Customers?
One of the biggest advantages of river cruising is how immersive the experience is. Ships are smaller and more intimate than ocean vessels, creating a relaxed and sociable atmosphere.
Another highlight is location. River ships typically dock right in the heart of cities and historic towns, often allowing guests to step straight off the ship and begin exploring.
Many river cruises also include a number of excursions, dining experiences and drinks within the fare, making them an easy and enjoyable way to discover several destinations in one journey.
Finding the Right River Cruise for You
After spending time on so many different ships this week, the biggest takeaway is that there isn’t just one type of river cruise.
Some customers are looking for ultra-luxury and fine dining, others prefer a relaxed contemporary atmosphere, while many simply want a comfortable and convenient way to explore Europe’s rivers and historic cities.
The key is understanding what you want most from the experience — whether that’s luxury, value, included excursions, dining, itinerary, or simply the style of ship that feels right for you.
The good news is that with so many wonderful ships sailing Europe’s rivers today, there really is a river cruise for everyone.
And that’s where a little expert guidance can make all the difference — helping match the right ship, cruise line and itinerary to create the perfect river cruise experience.
