From Snowy Peaks to City Streets: My Unforgettable Canadian Adventure

From Snowy Peaks to City Streets: My Unforgettable Canadian Adventure

Six years ago, I travelled through the Canadian Rockies with my children — a trip that still holds some of my favourite memories. We drove the Rockies back then, and it was such a fantastic way to explore at our own pace, stopping wherever and whenever something caught our eye.

This time, though, I experienced the Rockies in a completely different way — aboard the legendary Rocky Mountaineer. It’s a true bucket-list journey for so many people, and now I understand exactly why. It’s an experience I’ll never forget!

✈️ The Journey Begins

After being awake for over 20 hours trying to adjust to the time zone, I wanted to keep going so off we went to explore Banff...

Our Air Canada flight was brilliant — super fast, excellent food, and smooth, efficient customs on arrival. We checked into the Otto Hotel in Banff — a stylish, modern property with outdoor hot tubs (yes, perfect after a long day!) and a free ROAM bus pass to hop on and off around Banff. Hotel is around 10mins walk away from centre of Banff

🌞 Exploring Banff

Our first day was everything I’d hoped for and more. We took the Banff Gondola, and the views were simply breathtaking — sunshine, a light snowfall, and those incredible mountain landscapes all around. A perfect start to our Rockies adventure!

💙 Lake Louise & Moraine Magic

An early start took us to Lake Louise, just an hour’s drive from Banff with countless beautiful stops along the way. The scenery was unreal — crisp air, blue skies, and snow-capped peaks.

Lake Louise was simply magical. The clear blue waters shimmered in the morning light, and of course, we couldn’t resist a stop at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise — what a view! Whether it’s enjoying a coffee overlooking the lake or hopping in a canoe to explore, it’s pure perfection.

Next stop: Lake Moraine. A short drive and a walk up to the viewpoint left us speechless — those turquoise and green waters surrounded by rugged peaks were unforgettable.

Lunch was at the Cliffhouse Bistro at Mount Norquay, reached by a scenic chairlift ride. Fantastic food, amazing views, and a glass of something bubbly — bliss!

We finished the day soaking in the Otter’s hot tub with a cocktail in hand, surrounded by the Rockies. No photo could do it justice.

🚆 The Rocky Mountaineer – A Bucket-List Moment

Then came the big one: the Rocky Mountaineer. Wow, wow, WOW!

We travelled in GoldLeaf Service, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The bi-level glass-dome carriage gave us panoramic views as we glided past mountains, lakes, and forests. The food was five-star, the service was flawless, and the scenery — absolutely breathtaking.

The first snow of the season in Banff made the views even more magical — it felt like travelling through a postcard.

🏔️ Banff to Kamloops on board the Rocky Mountaineer

Our first leg covered 309 miles, boarding at 7:30am and arriving in Kamloops around 7pm. Every mile offered something new — ever-changing scenery, delicious meals, friendly hosts, and endless photo opportunities. It was pure magic on rails and one of the most memorable travel experiences of my life.

Overnight stay in Kamloops, the following day we travelled to Vancouver

🏔️ Kamloops to Vancouver on board the Rocky Mountaineer

The following day, we continued to Vancouver, covering another 285 miles- I wasn‘t sure the scenery would be as pretty, but I actually loved this leg just as much as the scenery was so different. Just LOVED it- being fed every 2 hours with outstanding service, food and drink, what more could you want!

🌆 The Final Stop: Vancouver

Spending three nights exploring this stunning city surrounded by ocean and mountains, here's what I got up to in Vancouver.

🚴‍♀️ E-bikes around Stanley Park – a must-do! Scenic, safe, and so much fun (and yes, we stopped to admire the totem poles!).

🏙️ Gastown & Vancouver Lookout – charming cobblestone streets and breathtaking skyline views.

🌉 Capilano Suspension Bridge – a walk through the rainforest canopy with thrilling bridges and treetop walkways.

🍴 Granville Island Foodie Tour – two delicious hours of local treats and stories for any food lover.

🌺 UBC Botanical Gardens – peaceful, lush, and the perfect spot to unwind.

🎢 FlyOver Canada – a virtual flight experience across the country — such a fun finale!

From snow in Banff to sunsets in Vancouver, this trip had it all — adventure, scenery, and moments I’ll treasure forever.
