🌴 My Costa Rica Family Adventure – A Pure Vida Experience!
🌴 My Costa Rica Family Adventure – A Pure Vida Experience!
Our Easter family adventure (2 adults + 3 teens: 19, 17, 14) to Costa Rica was everything we hoped for and more.
From rainforest лодges and wildlife encounters to volcano views and beach sunsets, this trip truly delivered the meaning of “Pura Vida” – pure life.
We travelled with Iberia via Madrid to San José, beginning a journey through four incredible and very different destinations.
🌿 Tortuguero – Remote, Wild & Truly Unique
Our trip started with one night in San José before an early 6 am transfer (around 4 hours by coach and boat, with a breakfast stop) to Tortuguero.
This place is something special. Only accessible by boat, it’s completely traffic-free and feels like stepping into another world.
We stayed at Pachira Lodge– a full-board, authentic rainforest lodge surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife. No air conditioning, just ceiling fans and open windows… and honestly, it worked perfectly.
Highlights:5 amm wildlife boat tour (the BEST experience here!) – monkeys, sloths, iguanas, exotic birds
- Guided rainforest walk around the lodge
- Visit to Tortuguero village – just 2,000 residents, with tourism directly supporting the community
Yes, it’s a journey to get there… but it is 100% worth it.
🌋 Arenal / La Fortuna – Adventure Meets Relaxation
We swapped boats for a light aircraft (a great time-saving option!) and arrived in La Fortuna.
Our base: Arenal Manoa Hotel– with stunning views of Arenal Volcano, lush grounds, hot springs, and even sloths on site!
What we loved:
- Relaxing in 7 thermal pools
- Huge breakfast buffet & delicious wood-fired pizzas
- Wildlife right on our doorstep
- Surrounded by Lush greenery and the backdrop of the Volacno
Top experiences:
- Mistico Hanging Bridges & La Fortuna Waterfall with Las Pavitas Tours
- Our guide Daniel was incredible – spotting wildlife en route and sharing so much knowledge
- Lunch at his family restaurant = unforgettable views + amazing food
- Waterfall rappel with Maquiqueuique Adventures(so good with the less confident children/adults)- Proper adventure! Abseiling waterfalls & exploring streams- Finished with a local meal – such a nice touch
We balanced adventure with downtime here, which made it one of our favourite stops.
🌫️ Monteverde – Cloud Forest & Thrills
Next up: Monteverde, via a jeep–boat–jeep transfer (about 3 hours). Scenic but winding – worth noting if you get travel sick!
We stayed at a beautiful KooralKoora Boutique Hotel– a small, boutique property with incredible views and 5-star service.
Things to note:
- Stunning hotel, but small pools (not ideal for swimming-focused stays)
- Set menu breakfast (less flexible for teens, but manageable)
- Located up a hill, so taxis are needed (reasonable set prices)
- Can Toast marshmallows after dinner- lovely touch.
Experiences:
- Ziplining with Selvatura Park-13 ziplines through the cloud forest – pure adrenaline. We went early 7:30 amm) to avoid queues.
- Night walk with a private guide at a local rainforest- Frogs, snakes, spiders, birds… and even a rat-like creature! - A completely different way to experience the forest by night with just torchlight!
- Coffee and Chocolate Tour with Don Juan- Really interesting to listen to how we get coffee and chocolate, hands-on experience too.
🌊 Manuel Antonio – The Perfect Ending
Our final stop was Manuel Antonio (around 4 hours by private transfer, with fun stops en route including Monkey House and Crocodile Bridge).
We stayed at the stunning Parador Resort & Spa– and wow, what a way to finish.
Why we loved it:
- Incredible ocean views
- Wildlife everywhere (even from our balcony!)
- Family-friendly: games room, mini golf, kids club, spa, gym
- Shuttle to the beach and town
What we did:
- Manuel Antonio National Park with guide Alonso- So much wildlife – monkeys, sloths, snakes, birds. Finished on a beautiful white sand beach
- Sunset catamaran with Planet Dolphin- Dolphins, snorkelling, slides into the ocean, drinks + lunch included – such a fun afternoon
- ATV tour with Jade Tours - Off-road adventure through the mountains
We also enjoyed local dining at El Avión and Ronny‘s Place – both with amazing sunset views.
🌱 Costa Rica’s Sustainability – Travel That Gives Back
One of the most special things about Costa Rica is its deep commitment to sustainability.
- Around 25% of the country is protected land
- Tourism directly supports conservation and local communities
- Places like Tortuguero village reinvest money back into the community
- Eco-lodges, wildlife protection, and responsible tourism are at the heart of everything
You truly feel like your visit is giving back, not just taking.
✨ Top Tips from Our Trip
- Always use a guide in the rainforest – you’ll see SO much more, whether it‘s Private or group, it‘s well worth it!
- Private transfers are worth it for flexibility and comfort (especially for larger families)
- Finish at the beach – the perfect way to unwind before heading home
- Food & drink can be pricey – budget accordingly, this isn't just in the hotels, locally it can also add up!
- A 10% service charge is standard (and well deserved everywhere we went)
- Costa Ricans are incredibly friendly – we felt safe and welcomed throughout, so don't worry at all about that!
- WhatsApp is essential – used for everything from tours to hotel communication- it'll become your best way to confirm and plan things- even taxis.
- Take your time, don't rush or fit too much. The weather is variable- you will get wet in the rainforest, but soon dry off! Just pack a rain jacket, and you're good to go!
- Small notes for tipping- We took USD, and everywhere accepted these
💚 Final Thoughts
Costa Rica completely stole our hearts. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, wildlife, relaxation, and meaningful travel.
