Christmas Markets Cruise on the Rhine

A Festive Journey on the Rhine: Christmas Markets Cruise Aboard Geoffrey Chaucer

I have just returned from my first Christmas Markets cruise, and it did not disappoint!

My flights from Stansted with seats were included in the package,e and an efficient transfer took us to the ship within 15 minutes. We relaxed in the lounge until our cabin was ready.

There are few better ways to slip effortlessly into the spirit of the season than drifting down the Rhine on a Christmas markets cruise. This 4-night adventure with Riviera Travel — beginning and ending in Cologne aboard the elegant MS Geoffrey Chaucer — captures everything enchanting about winter in Germany: twinkling lights, steaming glühwein, half-timbered towns, and the timeless beauty of the Rhine Gorge.

Here’s what it’s like to sail through a storybook Christmas on one of Europe’s most magical rivers.

Day 1: Cologne – A Sparkling Start

Your festive escape begins in Cologne, a city that does Christmas markets on a grand, glittering scale. After boarding the Geoffrey Chaucer — known for its spacious cabins, warm hospitality, and refined comfort — you have time to settle in before heading out to explore.

Cologne boasts several markets, each with its own charm. The most iconic unfolds beneath the soaring spires of the Cologne Cathedral, where more than a hundred wooden chalets circle a towering Christmas tree. Wander through stalls selling handcrafted ornaments, lacework, toys, and irresistible seasonal treats like roasted almonds and local Reibekuchen (potato pancakes).

Back on board, the ship sets the festive tone with a welcome dinner as the city lights shimmer along the riverbanks.

Day 2: Rüdesheim – Storybook Christmas Charm

Your first full day of cruising carries you through the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge, a dramatic landscape of imposing castles, terraced vineyards, and legendary river bends. It’s beautiful at any time of year, but winter lends it a special magic — the mist rising from the water, the hills dusted like powdered sugar.

Most of the morning was spent outside on the top deck, taking in the landscape while listening to the running commentary.

Alternatively,y you can admire the views from the warm lounge area while drinking a tea or coffee.

By afternoon, you arrive in Rüdesheim, one of the Rhine’s most beloved wine towns. At Christmas, Drosselgasse becomes a festive labyrinth of decorations, music, and artisan stalls. The Rüdesheim Christmas Market of Nations features gifts and foods from around the world, adding an international flair to the traditional German setting.

You can join the walking tour or just wander on your own.

Group 1 will be the slow walking group for those who prefer a slower pace.

Don’t miss:

Rüdesheimer coffee — a flaming local speciality made with Asbach brandy

Live Advent music performances in the streets

Traditional crafts from over a dozen countries

Return to the ship filled with holiday warmth — and perhaps a bottle of local Riesling.

Day 3: Koblenz – At the Confluence of Beauty and Tradition

Morning cruising brings you to Koblenz, where the Rhine meets the Moselle at the famed Deutsches Eck. Steeped in history, the city offers a lovely blend of ancient fortifications and cheerful winter festivities.

Koblenz hosts several markets spread across its old town squares. You’ll find:

Artisanal gingerbread and stollen

Handmade wooden toys

Intricate candles

A delightful Christmas bakery shack (a must for sweet lovers)

For a panoramic view, take the cable car across the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress — from above, the twinkling lights of the city look like a constellation scattered across the riverbanks.

Again,n a free walking tour is included in your Riviera cruise.

Day 4: Bonn – A Festive Surprise

Often overlooked by travellers, Bonn is a delightful revelation during Advent. Beethoven’s birthplace dresses itself beautifully for the season, with a large, atmospheric market stretching across Münsterplatz and the surrounding streets.

I personally loved Bonn and think it would be a fabulous city break any time of the year.

Expect:

Elaborate nativity scenes

Local delicacies like Printen biscuits

Artisan stalls selling jewellery, ceramics, and hand-blown glass

A cheerful ice rink adds sparkle to the festivities

The city’s elegant baroque architecture forms a romantic backdrop for wandering. Enjoy one last mug of glühwein (or two) before sailing back toward Cologne.

Day 5: Cologne – Farewell to the Rhine

Your final morning brings you back where your journey began. With time for one last visit to your favourite Cologne market — or a quick stop for some final gifts — you disembark full of festive cheer, unforgettable memories, and perhaps a new appreciation for river cruising in winter.
