Tallinn- A Baltic Fairytale Brought to Life

Tallinn- A Baltic Fairytale Brought to Life

There are cities you visit, and then there are cities that feel like you’ve stepped into a story. Tallinn is firmly the latter.

Arriving by sea from Helsinki, the first glimpse of Estonia’s capital is nothing short of magical. Through a veil of mist, the skyline slowly reveals itself—medieval towers, pointed spires, and warm terracotta rooftops rising თითქოს from another century. It’s the kind of arrival that sets the tone instantly: this is going to be special.

A Stylish Base in the Heart of the City

A short transfer brought us to the Radisson Collection Hotel Tallinn, ideally located near Freedom Square. The contrast between old and new is immediate outside, centuries of history; inside, sleek Nordic design and contemporary comfort.

My room was spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views across the city. Thoughtful details, plush bedding, rainfall showers, and a calming neutral palette made it an ideal retreat after a day of exploring.

Stepping Into the Past: Tallinn’s Old Town

Tallinn’s Old Town is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval quarters, and exploring it on foot is like walking through living history.

With a local guide leading the way, we wandered through cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards, each turn revealing something new. The grandeur of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its distinctive onion domes, contrasts beautifully with the pastel façades of Town Hall Square. From the elevated viewpoints of Toompea Hill, the city stretches out in layers of red roofs and church spires, in a postcard-perfect panorama.

What makes Tallinn special is not just how it looks, but how it feels. The atmosphere is immersive, authentic, and wonderfully unhurried.

A Taste of Estonia

Our introduction to Estonian cuisine was as memorable as the sights.

It began at Raeapteek, one of Europe’s oldest pharmacies, where we sampled their curious “medicine wine” alongside traditional marzipan. From there, we slipped into the charming courtyard of Pierre Chocolaterie for rich, handcrafted truffles—decadent and indulgent in equal measure.

We finished in a cosy café, enjoying a flaky cheese pie while watching artisans carefully hand-paint delicate marzipan figures. It was a small moment, but one that perfectly captured the creativity and craftsmanship woven into Estonian culture.

Music, Atmosphere, and Comfort Food

The evening offered time to explore independently, and Tallinn doesn’t disappoint.

For something a little different, I visited DM Baar—a tribute to Depeche Mode that’s delightfully niche and full of character. Dark, moody, and unapologetically devoted, it’s a hidden gem for music lovers.

Dinner took a more traditional turn at Beer House on Sauna Street. Think hearty dumplings, local beer, and warm wooden interiors, a comforting, no-frills experience that hits exactly the right note after a day of sightseeing.

Baroque Beauty at Kadriorg Palace

The following morning brought a change of pace with a visit to Kadriorg Palace.

Built by Peter the Great in the early 18th century as a summer residence, the palace is an elegant example of Baroque architecture. Surrounded by manicured gardens and peaceful parkland, it feels worlds away from the bustle of the Old Town.

Inside, the rooms are beautifully restored and house part of Estonia’s art collection, offering a refined cultural interlude to the trip.

Slow Travel and Rooftop Evenings

The afternoon was left intentionally unstructured, a chance to wander, pause, and absorb the city at your own rhythm.

Tallinn rewards this kind of exploration. Quiet streets, independent cafés, and unexpected viewpoints reveal themselves when you slow down. A stop at Crock & Crumb provided excellent coffee and comforting, simple food—the kind of place you stumble upon and wish you had at home.

As evening approached, we headed to the rooftop bar at the Radisson Collection Hotel. Watching the sun set over Tallinn’s rooftops, the city bathed in golden light, was a moment to savour effortlessly stylish and quietly unforgettable.

A Medieval Farewell

For our final evening, dinner at Peppersack provided the perfect setting.

With its candlelit interiors, stone walls, and subtle medieval touches, the atmosphere felt immersive without being overdone. A rich cheese selection, hearty goulash, and a light sorbet to finish made for a satisfying and memorable final meal.

Final Thoughts

Tallinn is a city that lingers.

Compact and walkable, it offers an ideal short break—yet within its small footprint lies an incredible depth of history, culture, and charm. In just 48 hours, it delivers a seamless blend of past and present, indulgence and simplicity, energy and calm.

It’s not just a destination you visit, it’s one you experience.

And long after you leave, it stays with you.
