Once at Malta airport I was impressed – baggage claim and passport control were fast and it was a modern terminal. On the return journey I made use of La Vallette Lounge, I think this is a great plus as it finishes the holiday off in style. The lounge is peaceful but not stuffy and the array of drinks and food available is good.
The Westin Dragonara Resort
Both the external and internal grand lobby were very welcoming and I was soon checked in. The room was spacious with two double beds, lots of storage space, mirrors and lights. There is also a good size writing desk. Everything I needed had been provided and the extra touches like the lovely soft robes and slippers were welcomed. The room also had a good sized modern bathroom. There was a large balcony with table and chairs which had a lovely view of the pool and the sea. The Westin also provides Heavenly Beds in all rooms.
The hotel provides many facilities - two outdoor swimming pools, plenty of sun terraces, sea access, an indoor pool, jacuzzi and fully equipped gym. Restaurants include two à la carte – Quadro is a Mediterranean venue with welcoming atmosphere and staff. It's a popular spot for weddings for up to 50 and has an outdoor terrace overlooking the water.
The food portions are plentiful and delicious. We dined in a private room with the terrace doors open and views across to the lights of Sliema – a perfect setting for a perfect dinner – definitely one of my favourite meals throughout our stay.
ACTIVITIES/EXCURSIONS
Whilst in Malta I experienced many excursions:
The trip to see the islands of Gozo and Comino was very enjoyable and I would definitely recommend Gozo to those looking for a peaceful holiday perhaps in a villa with pool like those we saw at The Hamlet. I would recommend guests have a car and explore the wonderful island including its capital Victoria. The Ggantija Temples which really were amazing as was the wonderful Ta Mena estate where I experienced just about the biggest lunch I have ever ate!
For VIP's, the villa style holidays are very appealing as staff, including chefs, can be arranged and this will appeal to those looking to get away from it all in private surroundings.
However, my favourite excursion was to the capital of Malta – Valletta. Our first stop was the Upper Barakka Gardens, which is located at the top of Valletta and affords superb views over the Grand Harbour, The Fort and the Three Cities. This is a perfect starting point and I would strongly recommend either an organised tour or the luxury of a private guide as an absolute necessity to learn all about the history of this interesting city founded in 1566 by the Knights of St John after winning the city from the Turkish Ottomans. The city was then named after the Grand Master of the Knights La Vallette.
We learnt a lot of the history of Malta during our day here and a good way to do this is by visiting “The Malta Experience” - a 45 minute introduction to Malta held in an underground theatre. The highlight of visiting Valletta though has to be the Casa Rocca Piccola Museum, in the centre of Valleta and owned by the Marquis de Piro. He has turned his home into a living museum crammed with artefacts and the tour was provided by the Marquis himself who is both entertaining and knowledgeable. Another must do sight in Valletta is St John’s Cathedral – very much worth the 6 Euro entrance fee. The cathedral is a treasure trove of architecture and sculpture as well as art by Caravaggio.
Take the time to wander and sample the street cafes, these are great places for people watching. Visit the Ambrosia restaurant, a very traditional feeling eatery with fantastic food – definitely one of my favourite places. A visit to Valletta is a must for everyone who goes to Malta.
All in all I think Malta is an ideal destination for the VIP traveller with excellent accommodations, amazing places to eat, fantastic sights to see, great experiences and great places to relax. Malta really does have so much to offer along with a good year round climate and being extremely safe – I certainly will not hesitate to recommend the islands to my VIP travellers.
