Luxury holidays to Malta and Gozo are perfect for discovering so much with such a variety of things to see and do as well as being steeped in history and culture. I have always been used to Malta being known as the "Marmite of the Med"... you loved it or hated it, but after this visit it is now and always will be known to me as the little island with a big Heart. Just fifteen miles by nine, located in the very middle of the Med with an elegant capital city that sits proudly above the glorious grand harbour of Valletta surrounded by the beautiful turquoise sea of the Med.
If you are interested in the history, the islands earliest archaic archaeological sites and beautifully preserved temples are the oldest free-standing buildings in the world - pre-dating the Egyptian pyramids - whilst imposing medieval fortress towns have dominated the landscape since the times of The Knights of St John. Our guide Mary-Rose was amazing and full of knowledge and passion for the history of the island, which made it so interesting and kept us eager to know more.
If you're looking for sandy beaches there are a few - not large but sweet and surrounded by the stunning blue turquoise waters.
Try the local traditional dishes which include hobza - delicious sourdough bread, aljotta - a nourishing fish broth made with rice, tomato and garlic and pastizza - flaky pastry stuffed with ricotta or mushy peas. Timpana goes head to head with fenek in the vote for the islanders’ favourite dish. The former is a baked macaroni pie, stuffed with cheese, egg, minced beef, tomato, onions and garlic. The latter is rabbit, whether stewed, roasted, fried or baked in a pie. Traditional sweets include dates, almonds, hazelnuts, honey, treacle and light pastry.
A wide selection of bars and restaurants serve a great selection of beers, spirits and liqueurs including wines from the local wine houses of Marsovin and Delicata (I can personally recommend the red). Also amongst the huge number of restaurants on the island, you will find lots of amazing places that serve English, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Lebanese and Thai cuisine, so there's an amazing amount of choice for every diet and palate.
NEWS for the diary : Malta’s diminutive capital, the smallest in Europe, is an UNESCO World Heritage site and has been elected as European Capital of Culture for 2018 so you know this little island with its big heart will be busy - make a note in the diary to book early!
The island is undergoing lots of constitution and refurbishments and it's looking good plus it shows the economy is on the up with lots of investment in place. With all the churches, (365) museums and historical palaces and villages packed within its tiny, narrow quaint streets, this is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world. The city offers impressive Grand Harbour views to the south-east and Marsamxett Harbour to the north-west.
Pictured - our second day when we had a walking tour of Valetta.
On our third day, we had a lovely walk around Mdina & Rabat through the narrow streets, stopping off for a coffee and a piece of the famous chocolate cake at the Fontanella Tea Garden where they say "you can't buy happiness but you can buy cake and that's kind of the same thing". Then we went for a tour of the exquisite family-run Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux: Mdina, a beautiful 17th-Century palace within the medieval walls of Mdina. This 17 room, 5-star boutique hotel is absolute luxury at its best and just a 3-minute walk from St. Paul's Cathedral.
Even the rich and famous like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have stayed on the island of Malta while Brad filmed his movie, World War Z. Brad and Agelina slipped out for some quality time and dinner at the Xara Palace hotel (the same restaurant that Brad took his then wife, Jennifer Aniston to back in 2003 while he was filming Troy. At that time, they apparently wrote in the guest book: "Thanks for the great escape. Much love, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston".
All the rooms are individual Stately rooms lavishly styled with plush fabrics, antiques and paintings. All come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Some rooms and all suites feature separate living areas; some are split-level. Upgraded suites offer terraces and/or whirlpool tubs.
There are 2 fine dining, modern Mediterranean restaurants, 1 set in the glass-roofed internal courtyard. A fitness room is available.
This is Malta's only 5-star luxury boutique hotel hidden away in the medieval fortified city of Mdina, Malta. This is not a hotel for families with children. It is very much for couples and perfect for honeymooners. The service is first class and the staff are attentive and very courteous.
