South Africa: Cape Town, Winelands & Safari... An Adventure to Remember!!

Back in September 2024, I finally ticked off a destination that had been on my bucket list for years β€” a South African safari! Hosted by the brilliant team at Africa and Beyond, this educational trip was everything I’d hoped for and more.

Our journey began at Heathrow with an overnight flight to Cape Town. On arrival, we were greeted by a friendly meet-and-greet service who handled our baggage while we breezed through immigration β€” a real bonus for anyone who likes a seamless start to their holiday.

Our transfer into the city took around 40 minutes, and our first stop was the Cape Grace Hotel β€” wow! Perfectly positioned on the V&A Waterfront, the hotel, now part of the Fairmont Group, had just reopened in May 2024 following an extensive refurbishment. Elegant interiors, a calm atmosphere, and rooms with views of either Table Mountain or the marina made it a perfect introduction to Cape Town.

After a quick freshen-up, we walked over to The Silo Hotel for a show-round. What a place! Housed in a converted grain silo, this 5-star property is bursting with character β€” every room is unique, with striking floor-to-ceiling windows and freestanding baths. The rooftop pool and bar are ideal for a sunset cocktail, and despite the luxurious setting, drinks were very reasonably priced. A perfect end to our first day.

Top Tip: Prebook a rooftop table at The Silo to guarantee a sunset slot with stunning views of Table Mountain..

Exploring Cape Town

The next day started bright and early with a guided city tour. We took the first cable car of the morning up Table Mountain (around 8.30 am) to beat the crowds. Sadly, the mountain was shrouded in cloud, but even without the views, the experience was unforgettable β€” and the rotating cable car floor ensures everyone enjoys a 360Β° view.

From there, we continued to Signal Hill and then to the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood. These pastel-painted houses have a fascinating history β€” once part of the Malay Quarter, they were painted in bright colours by freed slaves as a celebration of freedom.

Next came a quick stop for coffee at Truth CafΓ©, named the best coffee shop in the world by The Telegraph β€” and it absolutely lived up to the hype!

Then it was time for one of my all-time highlights: a helicopter flight along the coast to the Twelve Apostles Hotel for lunch. The views of the ocean and the mountain range were breathtaking, and to top it off, we even spotted whales from the air! Stepping off the helicopter with a glass of champagne and enjoying a delicious lunch overlooking the sea β€” a total pinch-me moment.

Into the Winelands

After a couple of unforgettable days in Cape Town, we headed inland to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, around an hour’s drive away. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second-oldest town, is full of charm β€” leafy streets, boutique shops, cafΓ©s, and a relaxed, safe feel both day and night.

We stopped at Bartinney Vineyard for lunch and wine tasting β€” a small, family-run vineyard with incredible valley views. The setting was stunning, and the meat, cheese, and bread platters paired perfectly with the local wines and sparkling rosΓ©.

That evening, we checked into La Fontaine, a boutique hotel with just 11 rooms. The homely, welcoming feel and the hosts’ friendliness made it one of those places where you immediately relax. I loved the small touches, like freshly baked cake with tea and coffee each afternoon.

Later, we visited Avondrood Guest House, another intimate property with stylish rooms overlooking the garden and pool. Dinner was at Le Bon Vivant, just a short walk away β€” exceptional food, elegant yet relaxed dining, and a great wine list.

The Wine Tram & Mont Rochelle

The following day was all about the Franschhoek Wine Tram β€” a must-do! You can hop on and off at different vineyards, enjoy tastings and lunch, and explore at your own pace. Our stops included Rickety Bridge and Mont Rochelle, Sir Richard Branson’s estate.

Mont Rochelle was a real stand-out β€” luxurious yet understated, with breathtaking valley views. We enjoyed a hotel tour and a delicious lunch on the terrace. The Manor House here would be perfect for families or small groups, with four ensuite bedrooms, a private pool, gym, and personal chef.

The Safari Experience

Finally, the part I’d been most excited for β€” the safari! We took a short flight to Port Elizabeth and transferred for about an hour to Founders Lodge. With just eight rooms set within a private game reserve, it felt intimate, peaceful, and surrounded by wildlife. I looked out of my window shortly after arriving and saw a zebra and two rhinos grazing β€” absolutely unreal!

That afternoon, we headed out on our first game drive, wrapped in blankets and armed with binoculars. Within hours, we’d spotted cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, wildebeest, and more β€” ending the day with sundowners and champagne as the sun set across the reserve. Pure magic.

The next morning, we transferred to Pumba Private Game Reserve, home to the famous white lions. There are two lodges here β€” Water Lodge and Bush Lodge β€” both beautifully designed with luxury rooms featuring outdoor showers and private plunge pools. We stayed in the Water Lodge, overlooking the river, and could even hear the hippos at night!

Evenings on safari are relaxed β€” great food, good company, and incredible starry skies. On our final morning drive, we were lucky enough to spot the white lions and their cubs β€” the perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure.

Final Thoughts

A South African safari truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The reserves limit vehicles to just two per sighting, so encounters feel intimate and peaceful. Every drive was special, and the memories will stay with me forever.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a safari, go for it. South Africa is the perfect place to experience one, and it’s a trip you’ll never, ever forget.
