My Unforgettable Journey Along South Africa’s Garden Route
The Garden Route had been on my bucket list for years, but nothing prepared me for how magical it would feel to finally experience it. From the moment I started driving along the winding coastal roads, with the ocean on one side and emerald forests on the other, I knew this trip would stay with me forever.
If you’re planning your own Garden Route adventure, here’s a personal look at what made my journey so special—and why this famous South African road trip deserves a spot on your travel list.
Beginning the Adventure in Mossel Bay
My Garden Route journey began in Mossel Bay, a sunny and welcoming town that instantly set the tone for the trip. I grabbed an ice cream from a local café and walked along Santos Beach, where kids played in the gentle waves and the salty breeze made everything feel lighter.
The highlight? Watching the sunset paint the sky orange while sitting on a rock overlooking the sea. It wasn’t dramatic or touristy—just simple, peaceful, and beautiful.
Getting Lost (In the Best Way) in George
Driving into George felt like entering a postcard. Tall mountains rose in the distance, wrapped in soft morning mist. I took a spontaneous detour up the Outeniqua Pass, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favourite moments of the entire trip.
Up there, the world felt bigger. The silence, the sweeping views, the cool mountain air—it made me slow down and truly take in the moment.
Wilderness: Where I Found Calm
Wilderness lives up to its name, but not in a wild, intimidating way. It’s more like nature giving you a warm, gentle hug. I rented a canoe and drifted along the Touw River, surrounded by thick forests and birdsong.
There was something almost meditative about gliding across the still water, completely disconnected from time and noise. Wilderness taught me to breathe a little deeper.
Falling in Love With Knysna
If I had to pick one place along the Garden Route that stole my heart, it would be Knysna. There’s a softness to the town—the calm lagoon, the surrounding forests, the cosy cafés along the waterfront.
I took a boat trip out toward the Knysna Heads, where the ocean crashes dramatically against towering cliffs. I remember standing on the deck, wind in my hair, and thinking, This is exactly why I travel—to feel this alive.
Sun, Sand, and Freedom in Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay—or “Plett”—felt like summer, even though it wasn’t. Long, golden beaches stretched out forever, and the water sparkled like something out of a travel magazine.
I hiked the Robberg Nature Reserve, which was challenging but incredibly rewarding. At one point, I stopped to watch seals playing below in the water. The scene felt so unreal that I just stood there smiling, completely lost in the moment.
Thrills and Wonder in Tsitsikamma
The final stretch of my Garden Route journey took me to the Tsitsikamma National Park, home to ancient forests and rugged coastline. Walking across the famous Storms River Suspension Bridge was one of those pinch-me experiences. The waves crashed loudly below, and the whole world smelled of sea spray and adventure.
And yes… I stood at the edge of the Bloukrans Bridge bungee jump, heart racing, legs shaking, wondering if I should do it.
I didn’t jump—but I’m still proud I worked up the courage to stand there and take it all in.
The Garden Route isn’t just a road trip—it’s a journey through some of the most soulful corners of South Africa. What makes it special isn’t just the scenery (though that’s incredible). It’s the feeling you get while travelling.
The freedom.
The peace.
The connection with nature.
The reminder to slow down and be present.
If you’re searching for a trip that blends beauty, adventure, and personal reflection, the Garden Route is exactly where you need to be.
