Malta – A Journey Through History, Culture and Mediterranean Charm

Malta may be a small island in the heart of the Mediterranean, but its history, culture and landscapes make it a destination with an extraordinary amount to discover. A recent visit with Kirker Holidays offered the opportunity to explore some of the island’s most fascinating historic sites, beautiful towns, traditional villages and distinctive hotels.

With a history stretching back thousands of years, Malta is a destination where ancient temples, medieval cities and centuries-old buildings sit alongside a vibrant modern Mediterranean culture.

Ancient Malta

One of the highlights was a visit to the remarkable Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples, situated on Malta’s southern coast. Dating back more than 5,000 years, these megalithic temples are among the oldest free-standing structures in the world.

Their impressive stone architecture and coastal setting provide a fascinating glimpse into the island’s prehistoric past and are a reminder of just how long Malta has been inhabited.

Another memorable experience was a visit to Ta’ Cicivetta Farmhouse, where visitors can discover a more traditional side of Maltese life. An olive oil tasting and local lunch provided an opportunity to experience some of the island’s agricultural heritage and taste locally produced ingredients.

Valletta – Malta’s Historic Capital

No visit to Malta would be complete without exploring Valletta, the island’s magnificent capital.

Founded by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is packed with impressive architecture, grand palaces, churches and historic streets. Its compact size makes it particularly enjoyable to explore on foot, with something of interest around almost every corner.

The city’s position overlooking the Grand Harbour also provides spectacular views and highlights the strategic importance Malta has held throughout its history.

Mdina – The Silent City

Another fascinating destination is Mdina, the ancient walled city and former capital of Malta.

Often referred to as the ‘Silent City’, Mdina is characterised by narrow, winding streets, honey-coloured limestone buildings and impressive views across the surrounding countryside. Walking through its historic gates feels like stepping back in time, with its medieval atmosphere making it one of Malta’s most memorable places to visit.

The Three Cities and Marsaxlokk

Malta’s maritime history was brought to life during a visit to the Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. Located around the Grand Harbour, these historic fortified cities have played an important role in Malta’s military and maritime history.

A traditional Maltese boat trip offered a different perspective of the harbour and its historic waterfront before continuing to Marsaxlokk, one of Malta’s most picturesque fishing villages.

Marsaxlokk is particularly recognisable for its colourful traditional fishing boats, known as luzzus, which line the harbour. The village retains a strong connection with fishing and offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy fresh local cuisine beside the water.

A Wonderful Choice for a Cultural Escape

Alongside its history and culture, Malta offers an excellent choice of hotels, from elegant historic properties to contemporary luxury and wellness retreats. Properties visited during the trip included AX Verdala Wellness Hotel, Corinthia Palace, AX Rosselli and Xara Palace, each offering a very different experience.

What makes Malta particularly appealing is the variety it offers within such a compact destination. Ancient history, fascinating architecture, beautiful coastlines, traditional villages, excellent food and stylish hotels can all be combined into one memorable holiday.

Whether exploring the streets of Valletta, discovering the ancient temples, wandering through Mdina or watching the colourful boats in Marsaxlokk harbour, Malta offers an opportunity to experience much more than simply a Mediterranean break.

It is a destination where history is quite literally around every corner – and one that rewards those who take the time to explore it.
