Exploring Athens: Highlights from Our City Stay

During our recent stay in Athens, we spent our time exploring the city with a mix of sightseeing, food, and local experiences. One of the easiest ways to get around was the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off, which we used on both the central city line and the Riviera line down to the coast. It made getting around simple, and the commentary helped us get a feel for the city.

We really enjoyed the guided walking street food tour, which was a good way to get our bearings and see parts of Athens we might have missed otherwise. The food scene is varied and interesting, and it was fun to try local specialities at small, authentic spots. One café we liked was Little Kook, with its quirky seasonal themes. When we were there, it was just switching from Halloween to Christmas.

For wandering and shopping, the Plaka area is worth exploring. The cobbled streets, small boutiques, and hidden corners make it a pleasant area to stroll around. Another experience we enjoyed was seeing a movie at Cine Paris, an open-air rooftop cinema in Plaka with nice views of the Acropolis.

Visiting the Acropolis is a must. If possible, go early to avoid the crowds. It’s also worth visiting the Acropolis Museum, which gives lots of information on the site’s history. On the way down, take the route through Anafiotika, a tiny hillside village with whitewashed houses similar to those found in Santorini.

Athens is a mix of history, culture, and everyday city life. From open-air cinemas to themed cafés, lively streets, and tucked-away villages, there’s plenty to see and do, and it’s easy to spend a few days just exploring and enjoying the atmosphere.
