🌊 4 Nights of Luxury Aboard Explora I – A Journey to Remember
Earlier this month, I had the absolute pleasure of sailing on the stunning Explora I with Explora Journeys, and let me tell you — it was everything I hoped for and more. Here’s a day-by-day recap of our unforgettable 4-night Mediterranean adventure.
🛳️ Day 1 – Embarkation & Elegant Evenings
From the moment we stepped aboard, everything felt seamless and elevated.
✨ Embarkation highlights:
Quick, smooth check-in
Safety video shown privately in our stateroom
Our suite? Ultra-luxurious and thoughtfully designed:
Dyson hairdryer
Gorgeous luxury toiletries
Huge balcony with a comfy day bed
A chilled bottle of Champagne waiting for us 🍾
Fully stocked minibar (wine & soft drinks included)
The attendant asked about our preferred spirits & wines — they were delivered promptly! 🥂
Evening outfit pressed (included – genius!)
10 pieces of complimentary laundry during the voyage 👚👕
We split into two groups for our first evening of fine dining:
Kay, Leanne & Christine experienced a French-inspired evening at Fil Rouge
Lucia, Jess, Elisa & I opted for the Asian restaurant Sakura — the cocktails, sushi, and wine were outstanding.
A perfect first evening at sea, filled with style, flavour, and fabulous company.
🌅 Day 2 – Sea Day Serenity
Our first full day at sea was all about soaking up the refined atmosphere onboard.
🍴 Lunch at Emporium Marketplace
This is not your average cruise buffet. Think fresh sushi, carved meats, gyros, and beautifully presented salads, served to you by chefs behind the counters—a laid-back, elegant lunch option with a global twist.
🧘♀️ Afternoon Bliss: Infinity Pool
We spent the afternoon lounging at the adults-only aft infinity pool on Deck 5 — complete with double cabanas and its bar. Calm seas, chilled cocktails, and the sound of the ocean… total relaxation.
🍸 Pre-Dinner at the Sky Bar
Drinks at Sky Bar (Deck 14) were a highlight. As the DJ played smooth sunset beats, we sipped refreshing cocktails and watched the sun sink into the horizon.
🍣 Dinner at Sakura (again!)
I returned to Sakura for dinner because, honestly, it’s that good. The service, the flavours, the ambience — flawless.
💫 Highlight of the Day:
Chilling in our private cabana by the infinity pool — with cocktails and sea views. Heaven.
🇬🇷 Day 3 – Docked in Katakolon, Gateway to Ancient Olympia
We arrived in Katakolon, a charming Greek port with plenty of options, whether you’re a history buff or prefer relaxed coastal vibes.
🗺️ Exploring Options:
Olympia: Just 35 mins by taxi (€80 approx). Ideal if you’re keen on ancient ruins.
Staying Local: Katakolon is small but lively — an easy walk into town reveals:
Boutique shops & souvenirs
Seafront tavernas (Mythos beer + gyros = win)
Friendly, local vibe with a slow pace that makes you want to linger
🚂 Katakolon Tourist Train
A lovely way to see the countryside! The small train departs every 30 minutes from the town square, stopping at a beach and a winery. Approx €6 for a 30-minute scenic ride — well worth it.
Whether you explore ancient history or sip wine by the sea, Katakolon is a delightful stop.
🏝️ Day 4 – Island Adventures in Kefalonia
Today was all about discovering the jaw-dropping beauty of Kefalonia. And wow — what a gem.
✨ Fiscardo
A charming harbour village with colourful buildings, crystal-clear waters, and cute cafés. We strolled, snapped endless photos, and enjoyed coffee by the marina.
🌿 Assos
A peaceful, storybook village nestled beneath a hilltop Venetian castle. Winding cobblestone streets and dramatic coastal views made this one of my favourite spots.
🌅 Argostoli
The capital of Kefalonia is full of life and local flavour. We spotted turtles in the bay (!), browsed the shops, and enjoyed a seaside dinner as the sun set.
A dreamy day full of postcard-perfect views and relaxed exploration.
🇮🇹 Day 5 – A Day in Bari: Pasta, People-Watching & Puglia Charm
Our final port: Bari, Italy — a true under-the-radar highlight.
🛳️ Getting Into Town
Free shuttle from the ship to the city centre (10 mins)
Taxis to/from Bari Centrale (for trains or the airport) are around €20–30
👣 Exploring Bari Vecchia (Old Town)
We wandered cobbled streets and stumbled upon Strada delle Orecchiette, where local women hand-roll pasta outside their homes — a magical, authentic experience.
🍝 Lunch at Trattoria Donna Carmela
📍Largo Albicocca 14
Hands down, one of the best meals of the trip. Homemade orecchiette, local wine, and unbeatable hospitality — €25 for three beautiful courses. Highly recommend.
🛍️ Shopping Break
Bari’s shopping scene is a fashion-lover’s dream. From Italian boutiques to big names like Prada, Zara, and Calzedonia, there’s something for every style.
💼 Flying Out Afterwards?
Luggage storage is available near the station (~€8 for 4 hours)
Bari Airport is accessible via taxi, train, or a €1 bus
✨ Final Thoughts
Explora I is in a class of its own — refined, luxurious, and effortlessly stylish, with just the right balance of relaxation, exploration, and indulgence. From the exceptional service to the curated dining, this wasn’t just a cruise — it was a journey.
Would I sail again with Explora Journeys?
In a heartbeat. 💙
