Thailand – Culture, Elephants & Coastal Bliss

Thailand – Culture, Elephants & Coastal Bliss

In October 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to join a Premier Holidays FAM (Familiarisation) trip to Thailand — and what an adventure it was! From vibrant cities and jungle encounters to beachside bliss, this week-long trip perfectly captured Thailand’s diversity and charm.

We flew direct from Heathrow to Bangkok with EVA Air in Premium Economy, and I have to say — it was one of the most comfortable long-haul flights I’ve ever experienced. The extra legroom, wider seats and attentive service made such a difference on the 11½-hour journey. I’d highly recommend upgrading if you can — it really sets the tone for a relaxed start to the trip.

🌿 Chiang Mai – A Stylish Start in Thailand’s Second City

After landing in Bangkok, we took a short internal flight north to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city — a fascinating blend of old and new where ancient temples sit alongside trendy cafés and colourful markets.

We checked into the gorgeous Cross Chiang Mai Riverside Resort, a boutique-style gem that combines contemporary design with classic Thai touches. My top tip? Don’t miss a sunset drink at the rooftop Ozone Bar overlooking the Ping River — the perfect way to unwind after a long journey and soak up the magic of the north.

After dinner, we wandered down to Chiang Mai’s famous Night Bazaar — an absolute must-do! It’s bursting with energy and colour, full of local crafts, street food, jewellery, artwork and those all-important souvenirs. The scents of sizzling noodles and coconut pancakes fill the air, and the friendly locals make it a joy to explore. Definitely leave some suitcase space for your finds!

✨ Top Tips:

  • Spend an evening at the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar — a vibrant, friendly, and unforgettable experience.
  • Try a cocktail at the Ozone Bar for gorgeous sunset views over the Ping River.
  • Chiang Mai’s weather can be warm and humid — pack light, breathable clothing and comfortable sandals.

🐘 Elephant Hills Bush Camp – Ethical Encounters & Countryside Charm

The next morning, we set off for Elephant Hills Bush Camp, and this was honestly one of the highlights of the entire trip. We stayed in luxury glamping tents — complete with real beds, private bathrooms and air-conditioning — surrounded by stunning countryside views. The infinity pool overlooking the mountains quickly became a favourite sunset spot, cocktail in hand!

Our time at the camp was unforgettable. We helped feed the elephants, learned about the life of the local mahouts, and even made paper from elephant dung (surprisingly fun!). Seeing the elephants roam freely and cared for ethically was such a special experience — one I’ll never forget.

✨ Top Tips:

  • Bring lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes for the hands-on activities.
  • Don’t forget your swimsuit — the infinity pool at sunset is magical.
  • Pack insect repellent and citronella bracelets — you’re close to nature, and mosquitoes can be lively!
  • Keep your camera handy — the scenery (and elephants!) are incredibly photogenic.

🏙️ City Buzz in Bangkok

After our time in the north, we returned to Chiang Mai for a night at the elegant Shangri-La Hotel before flying south to Bangkok, Thailand’s buzzing capital. Our two-night stay at the Century Park Hotel gave us plenty of time to explore — from zipping around in Tuk Tuks through Chinatown to visiting the vibrant flower market and the magnificent Grand Palace.

A real standout was our Muay Thai (Thai boxing) class, which was such a fun and energetic way to get a feel for local culture — followed by a traditional Thai massage to recover afterwards. Let’s just say it was not quite the soothing spa experience I’d imagined — but definitely memorable (and I did feel amazing the next day!).

We also visited The Landmark Hotel, and what a gem it is. Perfectly located in the heart of the city, this stylish hotel has recently been refurbished, has a very inviting pool, and a sleek Club Lounge that’s well worth the upgrade. If you can, book a Premier Room — perched on the top floors, they offer sophisticated comfort, sweeping skyline views and access to personalised Club Floor services.

Guests staying in Club Rooms enjoy:

VIP check-in and check-out at the Club Lounge (31st floor)

Daily gourmet breakfast in the Club Lounge or Atrium Restaurant

Coffee, tea and light refreshments throughout the day

Evening cocktails and canapés with panoramic views (5.37.30 p.m.)

Turndown service each evening and late check-out until pm4pm

Complimentary WiFi, daily newspaper and 20% food & beverage discount across all hotel restaurants and bars

It’s a superb choice if you‘re looking for something a little special in the city — combining convenience, comfort and a touch of understated luxury.

✨ Top Tips:

  • The Skytrain is the best way to get around Bangkok — quick, cheap and avoids the city traffic.
  • Try a Tuk Tuk ride through Chinatown at night for a real taste of local life.
  • Be prepared for a Thai massage that’s more ouch than ahh — but totally worth it!
  • Treat yourself to a Premier Room at The Landmark Hotel for skyline views and exclusive Club Lounge perks.

🌊 Hua Hin – Beaches, Cooking & Pure Relaxation

To round off an already amazing week, we travelled south to the coastal town of Hua Hin, where golden sands meet gentle waves and laid-back luxury. We inspected some fabulous hotels, including Cape Nidhra, Ace of Hua Hin, and the elegant Centara Grand Beach Resort, but our base for two nights was the stunning Hyatt Regency Hua Hin.

The beach here is absolutely beautiful — soft sand, calm waters, and a relaxed atmosphere that instantly slows your pace. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a busy itinerary, and a refreshing dip in the sea quickly became a daily ritual.

We also enjoyed an archery lesson at the hotel (a lot of fun and a great icebreaker!), and the next morning we took part in a Thai cooking class — learning to prepare authentic dishes before enjoying our creations for lunch. Our final evening was spent sipping cocktails and dining under the stars at Centara Grand Hua Hin, celebrating what had been a truly unforgettable trip.

✨ Top Tips:

  • Make time for the beach! Hua Hin’s long, golden stretch is calm & clean.
  • Join a Thai cooking class — a fun and delicious way to bring home a slice of Thailand.
  • Leave space in your schedule to simply relax — this is the perfect spot to unwind.

🌺 Final Thoughts

Thailand has such a special magic — whether it’s the warmth of the people, the vibrant culture or the stunning scenery. From the charm of Chiang Mai, to the excitement of Bangkok, and the golden beaches of Hua Hin, this trip was the perfect reminder of why Thailand remains one of the world’s most-loved destinations.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of authentic Thai life, this destination really does have it all.
