Why I Love Kefalonia
Why I Love Kefalonia
Kefaloniawill always have my heart. There is something so magical about the island - from the scent of pine trees and jasmine in the air, to the sound of the crystal clear sea lapping the shore and the way the locals make you feel part of the family - the island stays with you long after you have left. So whether you prefer a luxury hotel, a boutique vibe, a private villa with a pool or a simpler affair, I can tell you the perfect spot for you on the island. From wellness breaks, family adventures, couple retreats and solo stays, there is a corner of the island just for you, and I want to share here some of my favourites.
Assos - Picture Perfect Charm
Assos is one of those places on earth that looks like it has been lifted straight from a postcard. Pastel coloured village houses tumble down towards the sea. Taverns selling freshly grilled fish, and a pace of life that only has one speed - extremely slow. Sunsets to make you stop and stare, and every meal, every view, every walk, is just special. It‘s the kind of place that makes you truly relax and would be perfect for couples looking to escape and spend quality time in each other‘s company. The ideal place to stay here is one of those places you cannot quite believe exists - it boasts panoramic sea views, modern interiors, and private terraces where you can enjoy your morning coffee gazing out to sea - some come with your very own plunge pool. You will feel right at home here, just steps from the water, and so magical you will want to stay forever.
Skala - Sun, Sand and Smiles
Skala has a village charm all of its own, and although it has grown up, it still has that special air about it. Suited for all kinds of visitor, it is lively enough to keep everyone entertained at their own level. Owning a 3km stretch of sand and shingle beach, with its gentle waves, and friendly atmosphere, makes it perfect for children (and grown-ups that secretly enjoy building sandcastles too!) Sprinkled with beach clubs, tavernas and upmarket cocktail bars - you will thoroughly enjoy your stay here. Accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes, and I have several recommendations of hotels, villas and apartments here - from swim-up rooms, sea view villas or a small and friendly central hotel, the choice is yours - I will gladly find you a hotel based on your own needs.
Trapezaki & Lourdas - Wellness, Calm & Connection
If your ideal holiday is all about slowing down, recharging and reconnecting, then this is the place for you. This dreamy part of the island is filled with olive groves, soft sandy beaches and a relaxed way of life - perfect for the ultimate wellness escape. You will find an excellent selection of quality tavernas serving Greek delights, such as Kefalonia Meat Pie and Kleftiko and while dining, you get to watch the sun setting over the Ionian Sea - absolute perfection. There are several hotels in the area with spas that offer wellness therapies - think yoga decks, cooking classes, holistic spa treatments and nourishing cuisine. You will leave the island glowing.
Fiskardo - Sophisticated and Soulful
The chic end of Kefalonia - a harbour village filled with yachts, boutique shops and candlelit tavernas. The home of the rich and famous in Summer, but arguably unpretentious, just simply charming and irresistible. Full of heart and soul, with a great mix of bars and tavernas, this village is perfect for those who enjoy a little sophistication served with their sunshine. Villas, boutique hotels and apartments right in the centre rule here - contact me for your ideal place to stay in this majestic part of Kefalonia.
Sami - Coastal Charm & Natural Beauty
Sami is a very much an underestimated place to stay on the island. It quietly captures your heart with its deep blue seas, a backdrop of lush green hills and mountains and home to the Ancient Acropolis, it has a lovely local feel - you can see the local fisherman chatting about their day, watch boats bob around on the sparkling Ionian Sea, and is home to some of the islands‘ attractions, such as Melissani Underground Lake, Drogorati Caves and Antisamos Beach. If you enjoy walking, there are many trails around here to follow. Plentiful local tavernas and watering holes adorn the village and harbour front and should be a serious consideration when planning your escape to the island.
Insider Tips from an Almost Local (that‘s me!)
My tips for travelling to Kefalonia for the first, second or twenty-second time include:
Walking up the Venetian Castle in Assos at Sunset. A gentle climb (take water, and guys, maybe the engagement ring!) The view from the top is worth every step. Afterwards, head back down to the village for dinner at Nefeli-Anait.
When visiting Melissani Lake - check the cruise ship schedule - visit early in the morning before the crowds, and then cool off swimming at Antisamos Beach - thank me later!
Hire a small boat for the day from the villages of Poros or Agia Effimia, explore hidden coves and swim in the clearest waters you have ever seen - pack your picnic and just drift off for the day!
If you would love to visit this special island for yourself, I would be delighted to help you plan your stay - whether it‘s a boutique hideaway, wellness escape, a luxury resort or family-friendly gem.
