Pretty PROCIDA

Pretty PROCIDA

Pretty Procida...

Chances are you have heard about Capri & Ischia, but Procida? It is a stunning little island a short ferry ride away from Naples Port. I visited in September 2021 and fell instantly in love with her charm.

I first saw Procida on the film "The Talented Mr Ripley" staring Matt Damon & also "Il Postino". It was also the film location of Cleopatra with the loved up, Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton. In 2022, it was Italy‘s Capital of Culture.

Only two square miles in total & it‘s where the Neopolitan's tend to head for a summer break. Tiny pastel coloured houses line the cafe-lined marinas and narrow streets, but also it boasts historic sites, nature and very quiet unspoilt beaches.

Just under 11,000 inhabitants, the main port of arrival is Marina Grande. It is beyond pretty, with lots of little houses dotted along the water front, in a rainbow of colours. Painted pink, yellow, orange, red & Blue, - traditionally a way for fishermen to identify them from their boats.

The main street is called Via Roma, and there is a fantastic spot there for lunch, called La Medusa, which has been welcoming people since 1954. Along the way you must try Procida's local pastry, called Lingua di Suocera (Mother in Law's tongue), made of traditional puff pastry filled with lemon custard.

From the main street, if you walk about 15 mins uphill, you arrive at the pretty port of Marina Corricella, Procida's oldest fishing village. It is only accessible by boat of foot. Lots of restaurants along the waters edge. I spent the whole day here, moving from place to place enjoying the sunshine. Grab a gelato before heading back to either your hotel, or to catch the ferry back to Naples. It really is somewhere to visit for a short break, honeymoon or even a day trip from Naples.

On the other side of the island is Marina Chiaiolella another small fishing village with great places to eat, craft shops and old school bread & cake shops. From here you can access the island's most popular beach Spiagga della Chiaolello.. The other beach worth a mention is Pozzo Vecchio, whose black sand beach were made famous by the film Il Postino (The Postman).
