Dr Livingstone I presume…or maybe not!

Well, it was Dr Livingstone who discovered the Victoria Falls bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe and an awe inspiring falls it is too. The great Zambezi which flows upstream for 20km to the mighty Musi-oa- Tunya’ meaning  ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ which is what the locals call the Victoria Falls. The falls is nearly 2 km wide and plunges 100 meters into the gorge below, where you can go white water rafting. A walk along the Knife-edge bridge which is a special vantage point, were one gets soaked from the fine spray that forms from this ferocious torrent of water must definitely not be missed. To get to see these magnificent falls take a connecting flight via Lusaka, the capital of Zambia and arrive in Livingstone, a small but bustling basic airport on the Zambian side. The falls have their highest flow in May to June, which does mean that some of the viewpoints are too misty, but however it does mean it is the most impressive time to view it from the air. It is only then that one can appreciate the grandeur and magnitude of this overwhelming site. The lowest flow is around October to December when the falls flows in small streams of water which will mean it lacks the thunderous impact that it would have when the flow is heavier. However it does mean at this time of the year there are plenty of other activities to do such as the white water rafting as mentioned before and other aquatic activities along the Zambezi. This is also an area where game viewing is recommended so a trip to see the mighty ‘Musi-oa-Tunya’ offers more than one expects. Relaxing with a G & T in the evenings watching a wonderful African sunset is something I would definitely recommend!
