Why River Cruising Changed My Mind About Cruising

Why River Cruising Changed My Mind About Cruising

This was my 1st CLIA River Cruise Conference in Amsterdam, and I‘ll admit it, before attending earlier this year, river cruising wasn‘t a holiday style I knew a huge amount about.

I'd helped clients book river cruises and had certainly seen the growing demand, but I'd never actually stepped onboard a river cruise ship myself...that soon changed.

Over several fascinating days in Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to stay onboard 2 different river cruise ships, tour several more and immerse myself in a sector of the travel industry that is currently experiencing tremendous growth, and I can completely understand why.

My First Impressions

The biggest surprise? River cruising feels nothing like ocean cruising.

Forget vast ships carrying thousands of passengers. River ships are intimate, elegant and surprisingly varied. Some offer a relaxed contemporary atmosphere, others focus on luxury, some cater exclusively to adults, and others strike a balance between comfort, value and destination-led travel.

What they all have in common is a more personal experience.

Most river ships carry fewer than 200 guests, creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where service feels genuinely personal.

One of the highlights of the conference was spending 2 nights onboard 2 different ships.

Experiencing river cruising this way gave me a much better understanding of what clients can expect and how each cruise line has its own personality and style.

Some ships felt modern and contemporary, others focused heavily on spacious accommodation and panoramic views, while one delivered a level of luxury that genuinely felt closer to a boutique hotel than a cruise ship.

What became clear very quickly is that there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" river cruise. Each cruise line offers a different atmosphere, level of inclusions and style of experience, making expert advice more important than many people realise. Just as I wouldn't recommend the same hotel to every client travelling to Mauritius, Greece or the Caribbean, the same applies to river cruising.

Different cruise lines offer very different experiences, which is why finding the right fit matters.

More Than Just the Ships

While the ships were impressive, what really stood out was the style of travel itself.

River cruising isn't simply about getting from one place to another.

It's about watching the scenery change throughout the day from the comfort of your ship.

It's about sailing past vineyards, castles, picturesque villages and historic cities.

It's about stepping ashore in the centre of destinations rather than arriving at a large cruise terminal miles away from the action.

In many cases, you can enjoy breakfast onboard and then walk straight into the heart of a beautiful European city within minutes, and that convenience is incredibly appealing.

Why River Cruising Is Growing So Quickly

Having now experienced it for myself, I can see why river cruising is one of the fastest-growing sectors within the travel industry.

For many travellers, it combines some of the best elements of touring, cruising and luxury travel.

You only unpack once, yet wake up somewhere new almost every day.

The pace is relaxed.

Excursions are often included or readily available.

The ships are intimate.

And perhaps most importantly, the focus remains firmly on the destinations.

Who Is River Cruising For?

This was probably the question I was asked most when I returned home, and the simple answer?... Far more people than you might expect.

River cruising appeals to couples looking for a relaxed way to explore Europe, travellers celebrating special occasions, food and wine enthusiasts, history lovers and even those who would never normally consider a cruise holiday.

If the idea of a large ocean liner has never appealed, river cruising may be worth a second look.

Final Thoughts

Amsterdam was the perfect setting for my first river cruise experience.

The conference allowed me to step onboard a variety of ships, meet industry experts and gain valuable first-hand knowledge that I can now share with my clients.

Most importantly, it reminded me why first-hand experience is so valuable. Brochures and websites can tell you about the facilities, but they can't convey the atmosphere, service and little details that make each river cruise line unique.

Seeing the ships, feeling the atmosphere and understanding the differences between the cruise lines means I can confidently match the right river cruise to the right traveller.

And after spending those few days in Amsterdam, I can honestly say that river cruising has moved much higher up my own holiday wish list.

If you've been considering a river cruise, or simply want to understand the differences between the various cruise lines and itineraries available, I'd be delighted to help. Having now experienced river cruising first-hand, I can help match the right ship, destination and style of cruising to suit you.
