If it was good enough for Johnny Depp I knew I would love it!
Choosing my summer break is never easy. The world is full of beautiful and very exciting places all with my name on them. This year we decided to return to the Caribbean for some rest, relaxation and a taste of the warm and friendly hospitality that is synonymous with these glorious islands. As time is precious we normally opt for a single centre trip in order to make the most of every second of our trip. This year we decided to do something different and headed off for a two centre holiday experience - The Grenadines (St Vincent) and St Lucia. Our arrival into St Vincent on a Liat flight from Barbados was uneventful, although there was some cheerful banter with other passengers about how many of our cases would have arrived with us - any concerns we had were short lived as we collected both cases and headed out to meet our transfer driver for our onward journey to the new and exclusive resort which is Buccament Bay.As we left the airport the colour ad the vibrancy of the island soon shone through - carnival season was rapidly approaching and the excitement was palpable. After our 40 minute transfer we arrived at a small gate and made our way across a bridge into the lovely world, which is ‘Buccament Bay'.
Buccament bay is beautifully positioned between the glistening blue Caribbean Sea and mountains which sit behind the resort covered in lush rain forest. We were met by our resort co-coordinator (our lovely lady was called Danvielle)Check-in is seamless; you are taken to your villa by your co-ordinator and given a quick orientation tour of the villa. The resort is home to over 100 villas of varying sizes. The smallest is a one bedroom and largest has four bedroom which are located directly on the beach. Each villa has its own plunge pool, Lavazza tea/coffee and espresso maker (pod style but very good coffee!), and spacious bathroom. Our villa had a lovely bedroom and an inside and outside seating area. The inside seating area is equipped with a fan, but without air-conditioning we opted not to use it as the heat and humidity were not really helped by the fan and I decided the results of being slowly roasted might be a poor look. The bathroom had a lovely deep (and very wide) bath plus a great inside shower inside that gave you the impression that you were enjoying an outdoor shower experience – the floor of the shower is made up of pebbles and a wooden slatted mat and the rain shower option worked really well.
Quick change and we were ready to discover the wonders of Buccament Bay Resort.
I should explain at this point that the resort is set to grow further over the coming years and will eventually incorporate more villas, places to eat and facilities. Given The Grenadines form part of the Caribbean I would hate to add a time-frame to this statement – on occasions time and the Caribbean seem to have undergone an acrimonious divorce!
Currently the resort has four main restaurants that operate on a rotational basis – each week the resort publishes a newsletter. In that newsletter guests learn all about activities on offer and the restaurants that will be open on any particular night. The four main restaurants are: -Jacks Steaks & Seafood Restaurant– This is the resorts more formal dining option where guests can enjoy some seafood, a steak or one of the specials. Guys need to wear long trousers not shorts and ladies have the option to really dress up or wear something smart casual. Enjoy some live music or just soak up the ambience. You must pre-book Jacks in advance and given it doesn’t open daily those enjoying a slightly shorter break should consider planning there dining options soon after arrival as it can get really busy for key times i.e. 7.30PM – 9.00PMThis restaurant is enclosed, with outside dining options if required and is fully air-conditioned.
The Bay Beach Club – The Bay Beach Club overlooks the twinkling bay. There are fans to keep you cool and the restaurant is partially enclosed, protecting diners from any unexpected showers. This is a casual dining experience. Wear your shorts and tee-shirts or something smarter. It’s all perfectly acceptable. This restaurant opens all day long on most days and even provided a breakfast option for the first few days of our stay. Waiter service is provided.
Bamboo Restaurant – An Oriental option which, during our stay only provided us with the opportunity to try out their buffet breakfast and a lunch option. Very casual dining and in my opinion not in the best of the restaurant locations. Bamboo is located right at the entrance to the resort before you cross the bridge.
Safran Restaurant – This option is tucked away right at the heart of the resort. It’s small – the outside are could cater for no more than 30 guests at a push – probably less and then the indoor are probably another 30. There is a bar area where you can grab a drink before you meal. Very contemporary Indian cuisine in a very quaint almost intimate setting. There are plans to open a Trader Vic’s at some stage.
The other options for eating include:
HQ Coffee Shop – Themed on a typical American coffee shop a lovely place to grab a coffee and sandwich or even a light breakfast. You can watch TV on a big screen or just grab a take away option including some pretty superb ice cream (yes I worked my way through most flavours during my seven night stay).
Ginger & Co Sushi Bar – Offers a sushi option from noon until around 5.00PM. The bar is incorporated into The Bay Beach Club.During our stay we experienced all of the dining options - the food and choice was amazing as was the friendly and efficient service.
We had a fantastic week at the resort only leaving to visit the film set/location for one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, to visit to the town's capital - Kingstown, along with a short visit to the very interesting Botanical Gardens - a combination of great beauty and history. We also took advantage of the Sunset Cruise excursion that the resort organise - this experience was probably the highlight of my holiday. We sailed alongside dolphins for almost the whole duration. The swam and jumped and frolicked in the surf much to the delete of everyone on board the catamaran.
After a week in paradise we left for St Lucia... and that's a whole different story. We loved St Vincent and have already added The Grenadines onto our 'bucket list' - there are 32 islands and cays to explore and so far we have only managed one!
