Expedition Cruises – The Holiday That Changes the Way You See the World
By Linda Parsons – Designer Travel | Expedition Cruise Champion 2026
People often ask me, “What makes an expedition cruise different from a normal cruise?”
My answer is always the same: it’s not just a holiday—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.
Over the years, I’ve helped many clients find their perfect cruise, but expedition cruising is something I’m especially passionate about. Every itinerary is unique, every day is different, and no two voyages are ever the same.
It’s About Discovery, Not Just the Destination
On an expedition cruise, you’re not rushing from one busy port to another. Instead, you’re exploring places that many people only ever see in documentaries.
One morning you could be watching humpback whales feeding beside your ship. The next, you might be stepping ashore on a remote beach where thousands of penguins have made their home. In the Arctic, you may spot walrus resting on sea ice or, if you’re incredibly lucky, a polar bear in its natural habitat.
These are genuine, unscripted moments. Wildlife doesn’t work to a timetable, and that’s part of the magic.
Small Ships, Big Adventures
Expedition ships are purposely designed to reach places larger cruise ships simply can’t.
Their smaller size means fewer guests, more personalised service, and access to hidden bays, narrow fjords and remote islands.
Travelling by Zodiac is often one of the highlights. These small inflatable boats allow you to get incredibly close to glaciers, wildlife and spectacular coastlines while expert guides explain what you’re seeing.
It’s Like Travelling With Your Own Team of Experts
One thing many first-time expedition cruisers don’t expect is just how much they learn.
Your expedition team isn’t there simply to lead excursions. They’re passionate experts—marine biologists, geologists, historians, ornithologists and photographers—who love sharing their knowledge.
By the end of your voyage, you’ll have a completely different appreciation of the places you’ve visited.
Luxury Means Different Things
People often assume expedition cruising means sacrificing comfort.
The reality couldn’t be more different.
Many ships offer spacious suites, outstanding restaurants, wellness spas, observation lounges and attentive service.
If you’re looking for ultra-luxury, companies such as Silversea Expeditions, Scenic Eclipse and Seabourn Expeditions deliver an exceptional experience, while HX, Ponant, Swan Hellenic, Aurora Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, Atlas Ocean Voyages, and Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic each offer something unique depending on the style of expedition you’re looking for.
Choosing the right expedition line is just as important as choosing the destination—which is where expert advice can make all the difference.
My Favourite Advice to Clients
One thing I always tell my clients is not to choose an expedition cruise purely by price.
Look at what’s included.
Some fares include flights, transfers, expedition parkas, waterproof boots, Zodiac excursions, drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and even photography workshops. Others offer kayaking, camping on the ice or submarine experiences.
Sometimes a cruise that appears more expensive actually offers much better overall value.
Why People Keep Coming Back
It’s something I hear time and time again…
People who take one expedition cruise rarely stop at one.
After Antarctica, they want to see the Arctic.
After the Arctic, they’re looking at Greenland.
Then it’s the Galápagos, Alaska, Iceland, South Georgia or the Kimberley.
Expedition cruising has a way of turning travellers into explorers.
My Top Tips Before You Book
✔ Think about what excites you most—wildlife, scenery, history or photography.
✔ Consider how active you want to be. Some expeditions involve gentle walks, while others offer kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing.
✔ Book early. The best cabins and popular departures often sell out well in advance.
✔ Ask questions. Every expedition line has its own personality, and finding the right fit can make all the difference.
