City break in Budapest, The perfect mix of culture, food & hidden Gems
Budapest is one of those cities that effortlessly blends history, culture, and a vibrant atmosphere, and after spending three days there, it’s safe to say it’s a destination we’ll absolutely be returning to.
🏨 Getting There & First Impressions
Arriving in Budapest, we opted for the 100E Airport Express bus, which takes you directly from the airport into the city centre in around 40 minutes. It’s simple, efficient, and a great, stress-free way to begin the trip.
We stayed at Eurostars Palazzo Zichy, a beautiful boutique-style hotel set in a restored historic palace. The property combines elegant architecture with modern interiors, creating a calm and stylish base in the city. Our check-in was smooth and efficient, and the hotel’s atmosphere felt welcoming from the moment we arrived. Its location also made it easy to explore Budapest on foot, with many key sights within comfortable walking distance or a short ride away.
From the moment we stepped out to explore, it was clear how easy the city is to navigate. Whether on foot or using public transport, getting around Budapest is incredibly straightforward.
📍 Exploring the City
We made a point of ticking off some of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks, starting with the breathtaking Fisherman‘s Bastion, with its fairytale towers and sweeping views across the Danube.
Just across the river stands the impressive Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the most recognisable buildings in Europe. Seeing it both by day and illuminated at night is something truly special.
We also explored Buda Castle.
To get up to the castle, we walked up and then took the Buda Castle Funicular back down. It’s a lovely way to experience both sides of the journey, the walk up gives you great views and a sense of achievement, while the funicular down is a charming and scenic ride over the Danube. The ticket costs around 5,000 HUF, and it’s well worth it for the experience.
One of the most meaningful stops on our trip was visiting Shoes on the Danube Bank. This powerful riverside memorial honours the victims of World War II and is a deeply moving place to pause, reflect, and take in the city’s history.
🔍 Unique Experiences
Something a little different we loved was searching for the famous Kolodko miniature statues hidden around the city. These tiny bronze figures are tucked away in unexpected places, turning sightseeing into a fun treasure hunt. We managed to find four during our stay… so there’s definitely a reason for us to return! 🤭
We also made sure to find the well-known Budapest “Moon” installation a popular photo spot and a fun addition to the trip. 🌙
🍽️ Food, Drink & Local Experiences
Budapest is a fantastic city for food lovers. A visit to the Great Market Hall is a must, where you can sample traditional Hungarian foods and browse local produce and souvenirs.
For something more casual, we headed to Karaván Street Food Court, which offers a wide variety of street food options in a lively setting.
One of the highlights of the trip was trying traditional Hungarian goulash, a rich, comforting dish full of flavour and one of the country’s most iconic specialities. It’s an absolute must when visiting Budapest. 🍲
We also visited For Sale Pub. This quirky spot is covered floor to ceiling in notes and business cards left by visitors from all over the world, and of course, I added my own!
For shopping and a bit of atmosphere, we wandered down Váci Street, one of the city’s most famous pedestrian streets.
🌙 Budapest by Night
One evening, we took a river cruise along the Danube, and this is something I would highly recommend. Seeing the city illuminated at night, especially the Parliament Building and the bridges, gives you a completely different perspective and is simply magical. ✨
💆♀️ Looking Ahead
Budapest truly offers something for everyone: history, stunning architecture, incredible food, and unique experiences around every corner.
Next time, we’ll definitely be adding one of Budapest’s famous thermal spas to the itinerary, such as Széchenyi Thermal Bath or Gellért Thermal Bath, the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring.
And with plenty more miniature statues left to find, it’s safe to say this won’t be our last visit to Budapest. ✈️
If Budapest is on your travel list and you’d like help planning your own city break, I’d be delighted to help you create the perfect itinerary.
