More About Finland

Finland is a beautiful country with plenty of natural scenery, from two million saunas to dramatic landscapes, and the bright lights of Helsinki. It is the eighth-largest country in Europe, stretching up from the Baltic Sea in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north. Despite its size, it has a small population, with most of its residents living in the south where the capital city, Helsinki, is located. As you move further north, you‘ll find more rural areas with fells and forests, snowmobiles as the transport of choice, and in some areas, like Lapland, more reindeer than people.

Finland is full of natural wonders, with over 187,000 lakes, fairytale forests, a maze of inland waterways, and a captivating coastline. The country's dramatic 700km seashore is quite something, studded by wooden seaside towns and sweeping chalk-white beaches.

Helsinki is a beautiful city, perfect for art, architecture, and history lovers. The city is awe-inspiring year-round and is nicknamed the "white city of the north." It is home to eye-widening buildings, such as Senate Square, City Hall, the Presidential Palace, and the Opera House, as well as a handful of museums. You can also enjoy local seafood dishes and Finland’s thriving café culture.

Lapland, in particular, offers plenty of winter activities. You can whizz across frozen lakes on a snowmobile one day, and the next day enjoy a ride through the forest on a husky-pulled sleigh.

Climate

North of the country sits within the Arctic Circle. Winter kicks in here around October time, bringing thick snow and temperatures below freezing.

Helsinki

If you're planning a city break, Helsinki could be an excellent destination for you. The city boasts impressive architecture, museums, family-friendly attractions, and Nordic cuisine. Helsinki is also a summer hotspot with over 30 beaches and numerous island adventures.

One of Helsinki's biggest claims to fame is its innovative design, with ground-breaking examples of building and architecture dotted around the city. You can also find several museums and attractions that showcase Finnish talent. Some notable buildings include the Church of Rock, Oodi Helsinki Central Library, and the Finlandia Hall.

Helsinki is also home to many beaches, which might come as a surprise to some visitors. With more than thirty along the shoreline and many more that edge the archipelago of islands off the city's coast, you'll have plenty of options to choose from. The largest beach is Hietaniemi Beach, but Kivinokka Beach is also quite popular, surrounded by summer cottages and woodland.

If you're traveling with family, Helsinki has many attractions to keep the younger tourists entertained. Sea Life Helsinki, for instance, is home to sea creatures like stingrays and sharks, while Korkeasaari Zoo, which dates back to 1889, is built on one of Helsinki's islands and is easily reached by ferry. The Helsinki Tram Museum, also known as Ratikkamuseo, is another fun option to explore with your kids.
